Some people want sports to be sanitised: free of politics, culture, race or other aspects of our social life. They want us to believe in an image of an athlete competing to the best of his abilities but by leaving behind all his social existence. But history tells us that some of the most beautiful moments in sports are when it embraces politics and acknowledges the social existence of the athlete. “He paid the price with his choice,” explained Tommie Smith, “It wasn’t just a simple gesture to help us, it was HIS fight.
