Wildest factual claim I have seen this year that appears to be true: the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting was not a targeted attack, just a mass shooting that happened to take place at a gay nightclub because the shooter's first few targets of choice had better security.

Cell phone records in court evidence showed that the shooter first went to a few locations at Disney World, where security and police presence were both pretty strong, including metal detectors even at the attached mall. About an hour before arriving at Pulse, he got around to Googling "downtown orlando nightclubs," got directions to the first search result, went there (again: security and police), Googled again and got directions to the second search result (Pulse), went there, drove around a bit, got directions back to the first nightclub, then went back to Pulse. And then the shooting began after he walked past security, which was apparently one dude (at that entrance?).

The shooter himself said his motive was reprisal for American bombings in the Middle East, which he put in writing and said in recorded calls to 911 during the shooting. Claims that he had been to Pulse before, that he was gay or bisexual, or that he was motivated by anti-gay animus at best had no evidence that the FBI could corroborate. Where evidence seemed possible, all the specific claims I read had direct counter-evidence, like the person who claimed to have driven them to Pulse before, but cell phone location data showed them elsewhere when that was supposed to have happened. The strongest non-disproven claim I can find was that the shooter's father said the shooter was grossed out by dudes kissing. The weakest claim I saw repeated in multiple sources was that his ex-wife's father and new fiancé said he was gay, which is not exactly credibly sourced, and meanwhile the FBI found evidence that he was cheating on both his wives with other women. The shooter was not covering his tracks on his cell phone or internet history. The Washington Post says the FBI "also added he did not make gay slurs during the shooting spree inside the club, based on witnesses."

Most of this comes from a 2018 trial of an alleged accomplice (found not guilty). The shooter, being dead, did not have a trial. I do not recall having heard much/any of this at the time, since in 2016 it seemed sufficiently obvious that a guy who shot up a gay nightclub meant to shoot up a gay nightclub. In retrospect, he was probably attempting an unrelated kind of terror attack, and his intended message was drowned out by his last minute choice of targets.

Just as Omar Mateen’s internet searches factored in the decision to target Pulse nightclub on June 12, 2016, he also used the internet through his phone during the approximate three hours he spent holed up in the bathroom after killing 49 people. In a press conference on February 13, 2019, the state attorney revealed Mateen Googled how to spell “allegiance” and researched ways to fix his rifle that had jammed once 186 rounds were fired into the main dance floor. Law enforcement learned he was unable to do so when they recovered the firearm, as a spent shell casing was found still stuck inside the weapon, and they needed to use a dowel to remove it.

So are people going to start taking the mass shooting problem seriously now? 50 people confirmed dead. 400+ more injured. Sure, 50 people were also killed in the Pulse massacre, but who cares about that, they were all "just a bunch of faggots", right? (before you crucify me for that, THAT IS NOT HOW *I* feel) I saw a myriad of tweets and posts of people CHEERING ON Omar Mateen during the whole thing, hailing him as an instrument of divine retribution. In their eyes, the massacre was deserved, and they only really condemned him when it was revealed he was Muslim.

But how can they justify this? Just a bunch of average, country music fans mowed down by some bag of dicks who had no clear motive, or even no motive at all, while enjoying a concert. Now it's "different"...the victims did nothing to "deserve" their fates (I fucking hate typing that, NOBODY deserves this), not even the most insane of people can pull off the mental gymnastics necessary to "justify" something like this...maybe. Never underestimate crazy assholes.

One very cold comfort I suppose is that since he was old and ugly, there will be no tumblr hybristophile estrogen brigade rallying around Paddock, ready and willing to forgive every last dead body that he created, every family he has destroyed, every person who has now been maimed and/or traumatized, solely on the grounds that he was "cute"....hopefully. Again, see the last sentence of paragraph 2.

Will people please pay attention now?

Praying for the dead and injured, their families and friends, and the survivors who will no doubt be traumatized for life.

Wife Of Pulse Nightclub Shooter Arrested

The wife of Orlando nightclub gunman Omar Mateen was arrested by the FBI on Monday in connection with the mass shooting and charged with obstruction and giving support to a terrorist organization, officials said.

Noor Salman was taken into custody in California, where her family lives, but the case is filed in Florida, where her husband massacred 49 people at the Pulse nightclub in June, swearing allegiance to ISIS.

Her attorney said she had no advance knowledge of what her husband was planning and should not have been charged.

“Noor has told her story of abuse at his hands,” the lawyer, Linda Moreno, said in a statement. “We believe it is misguided and wrong to prosecute her and that it dishonors the memories of the victims to punish an innocent person.”

Authorities said early on that they would file criminal charges against Salman — who was with her husband when he bought ammunition and exchanged texts with him in the middle of the attack — if it was shown that she knew what he was planning and did nothing.

The 30-year-old was being held at the Santa Rita Jail ahead of an appearance in federal court on Tuesday. Prosecutors will then seek to bring her back to Orlando to face the charges.
