Prologue — Part 1
A white room with just a blanket, a laptop, a box of tissues, a notebook, and a small black cat. That was all the girl who lay in the middle of the carpet and slowly opened her eyes needed. She spent time with her friends or simply in the white space. Omari was the girl's name; her face had an emotionless expression; you couldn't immediately tell what she was thinking or what was going on inside her. And yet her friends and her little brother Sunny could. Sunny was a sweet but quiet boy. But he knew exactly what his big sister was like; every day he waited for his friends and sister on the picnic blanket. Always with a little something to eat and a chance to recover from their adventures. Yet there was a black shadow behind Omari, a shadow that always seemed to be watching her.
A dark truth that is hidden deep in her consciousness and that keeps reminding her of what really happened that night, that she has to accept and process the truth. "Omari, is everything okay?!" a female voice rang out, Aubrey's. The younger girl looked at her best friend worriedly, her eyebrows furrowed, causing light wrinkles to appear on her forehead. Omari nodded slightly and looked at Sunny, who was smiling at her. Hero, her boyfriend, sat next to her and held her hand. The warmth emanating from his hand transferred to her cold hand and made its way to her soul. The warm feeling of his hand made her lean against him and close her eyes.
Before she could remember what had happened, she woke up in white space. She knew she had to wake up; after all, it was only a few days until she and her mother would be moving to a new place. Omari looked at the knife she always carried with her, picked it up, and stabbed herself in the stomach.
...
...
A girl lies in her bed, the night casts dark shadows through the window and the moon casts a soft light on the girl's face. The girl's name is Mari and she is currently alone in the house. When she finally woke up she felt hunger rumbling deep in her stomach. As she left her room and carefully went down the stairs her gaze was caught by a picture, a boy who looked to be only 12 years old. Black hair, a motionless face but in his eyes you can see what you couldn't see in his own: joy of life. Next to him stands Mari. A family picture that gave Mari a pulling sensation in her chest, her sweet little brother Sunny.
At that moment, old repressed images surfaced in her head: black hair covering the boy's face, the slight swaying of the body hanging from a rope, and the empty eye that stared at her. Nothing but emptiness could be seen in the eye that once showed joy in life. And in front of the body stood a boy, her brother's age, his blond hair disheveled and his body trembling. He turned to Mari. His hands had just been tied to the branch with the rope, and his eyes were wet with tears running down his cheeks. Yet, a rare emotion could be seen in his eyes: disgust. She didn't really hear what he was saying; her pulse was too loud for her to understand what her now dead brother's best friend was saying to her.
Just a blink of an eye and she saw the blue light of the police and felt the warm arms of her parents around her. The next moment she was sitting in the station and had to describe what had happened: her brother had killed himself and that was what she had said. Guilt gnawed at her but she couldn't tell the truth; she was afraid to. For the first time, she couldn't think of anything positive. Even when Hero held her comfortingly in his arms, it didn't help. Aubrey cried so much that she couldn't leave Mari alone that night. Kel stood next to Hero and even he couldn't think of any sayings to lighten the mood. And Basil? He knew what she had done. He helped her so she wouldn't get into trouble, but he also regretted it. She had killed his best friend and wasn't even telling her friends the truth! When their eyes met for the last time, Mari felt goosebumps. She saw how broken Basil was, how much he was suffering and how much he despised what she had done. But she hated herself for it.
Mari was torn from her thoughts when she heard a knock and then a voice she hadn't heard in four years.
