Audio Drama Sunday - A Look back at 3 Years of Omega Star 7
Omega Star 7 - An Irreverent Space Opera Dramedy
The Ballad of the Wayfarer Began in Summer 2020 as a Pandemic Pet Project
Five friends huddled around a table in the dimly lit depths of a cement floor basement. A humble 2011 Mac Mini hums in the background, surrounded by an ensemble of budget condenser microphones. With uncertainty looming large, we embarked on a mission to birth our show into existence. The task seemed insurmountable, our knowledge a mere flicker in the vast expanse of podcasting.
Yet, against all odds, we pressed on. Collaboratively, we conjured a raw and unrefined Actual Play podcast – a testament to our audacious spirit. The mixing was a mess, the editing haphazard, but amidst the imperfections, the universe we crafted radiated an undeniable charm and depth.
Eight episodes and an entire narrative arc later, we made a bittersweet decision to put our venture to rest. The demands of life had roused from slumber, rendering our creative escapade dormant. Little did we know that a revival was on the horizon, a whisper of possibility in the Summer of 2021.
2021 - The Ballad of the Outlander was born
With the curtain drawing on the original actual play, we found ourselves standing at a crossroads. The Wayfarer's enchantment had always sprung from the unscripted dialogues, a magic we were determined to preserve. And so, like artisans dedicated to their craft, we embarked on a new path – transforming the show into an improvised Audio Drama.
Our approach was refreshingly uncomplicated. Armed with episode frameworks, we returned to that dimly lit basement where the creative energy had first ignited. Scene by scene, we wove intricate interactions among the fresh ensemble of cast members. The process remained delightfully chaotic, yet this time, we wielded a refined skill set that yielded a sonically gratifying experience.
As the year journeyed into the Winter of 2022, our momentum showed no signs of waning. But then, an unforeseen twist struck the narrative.
A devastating housefire uprooted the lives of the creators' family. Amidst the aftermath's trials and tribulations, the notion of sustaining the tale seemed improbable. However, the resolve remained unshaken. This time, a collective decision reverberated: the show must persevere, undeterred by adversity.
Tales from the Sometime Somewhere - Anthologies set in the Sometime Somewhere
Reaching the culmination of the Outlander's journey demanded time and careful consideration. Yet, a twist of fate displaced a creator, leading to a studio relocation within a family member's abode. The prospect of remote work beckoned, allowing us to navigate this transition. Rather than settling for a lackluster conclusion to an increasingly captivating narrative, we opted to exercise prudence.
We took a deliberate step back, embracing experimentation as we delved into the intricacies of the Sometime Somewhere universe. From this venture emerged our inaugural collection of Anthologies, each a distinctive embodiment of diverse genres. The driving force behind these narratives was to expand the universe's horizons, breathing life into a broader and more expansive cosmos.
Following the culmination of the Anthologies, our return was marked by a transformative approach. This time, we traded our improvisational style for a meticulously scripted and thoughtfully curated narrative. Collaboratively, we embarked on a journey to craft a well-rounded tale, which spanned a final arc of ten episodes to gracefully conclude the Outlander's saga. Though definitively concluding the current chapter, we left the door ajar for potential future explorations.
This journey proved cathartic as we witnessed the evolution of the story's tapestry, the characters' values tested, and their metamorphosis as the narrative reached its crescendo. Bid farewell we did, to cherished characters, some wrapped in the embrace of happiness, others burdened with melancholy, and a few enshrouded in the mists of interpretation.
Our objective was simple in its essence: bring the story to its rightful close.
Our creative ethos stands firm – whatever we initiate, we commit to concluding, and every episode is sculpted to stand as if it were our last. If the final note were to be "Wherever the Stars Take Us," then let it resonate with unwavering power. While the intent to expand the universe lingered, we recognized the potency of a concluding chapter and dedicated ourselves to its potent execution.
And so, as the curtain fell on that climactic episode, we receded into a period of dormancy, a creative hibernation that persisted until the year 2023.
"Wherever you go, there you are" - The Second Volume of Tales of the Sometime Somewhere released in Spring 2023.
The path forward unveiled itself as a tapestry of untold tales waiting to be woven. Conversations about the show's future beckoned, a new Ballad on the horizon. Yet, before charting those melodies, retrospective glances at the overarching narrative prompted us to fortify the universe's foundation. We set our sights on the enigmatic genesis that preceded the show's inception. The result: a prelude season.
This season materialized as a captivating array of anthologies, some sprawling across multiple segments. They bore witness to the captivating journey of an artifact named the Vestige, its transformative journey across hands and its profound impact on those ensnared in its aura.
Just like the inaugural volume, our spirit of exploration and experimentation thrived. We ventured deeper into the realm of diverse genres, casting a wider net. This time, our ambitions soared higher, embracing the likes of a 1980s-inspired College Romance and the mesmerizing fusion of Dirt and Dust, where Space Western collides with the Mecha Genre.
Here and now, poised on the edge of September 2023, we approach a crescendo. Yet, this juncture merely marks a new beginning. A symphony of plans, changes, and unexplored vistas await us, a testament to our dedication to captivate our cherished listeners with fresh wonders.
