I love pieces of media that have dark concepts but are still hopecore. Like they are classified as spooky or dark or fucked up because fucked up things so happen but they're also so hopeful in spite of everything. It makes you feel an urge to be good to be better to be more human. My best examples are Searching for a world that doesn't exist, omori, and Alnst.

Spoilers for part 2 of the arg but throughout the video Derek and Avery are both so hopeful. Avery is determined to find Derek he spends the time breaking a neathite block to find him. And Derek goes into the code of the game and breaks the rules to find a way back to save Avery. Derek leaves Avery the signs, you are real you are special. The note that Derek leaves Avery. They have some much hope in spite of the weird and scary stuff they're experiencing.

And in omori most of the games is technically fun and happy but its still a horror game and its still really dark at times (especially if you know the omori route content) but its still hopeful. All the characters in the real world constantly talk about mending relationships and making new memories together. And even stranger in headspace is often depicted as a scary figure but most of their dialouge is push sunny towards making the right choice. It makes you want to forgive yourself and let others forgive you. There IS a good ending, you just have to choose it.

And in alnst even though they go through so so much. Being forced to sing by the aliens and navigating relationships while struggling with all this. Theres a lot of dark stuff mizi's inner thoughts, everything about the aliens in general, Luke's experimentation. All the experimentation. How characters like Ivan, Luka, mizi, and sua all have these unconventional kinds of love and ways of expressing it that often seem weird to us viewers. But despite all this both till and hyuna have a mindset that is so unbelievably human. All the other human characters are victims of the system their in and it shapes them. But till and hyuna are able to still flourish and smile and have a good human experience with the rebels. We can see it in hyuna's healing sequence in weige and in All-In. She was flawed sure but she was also so free. And till even after all he went through he is able to work through it and I think its so meaningful that the end of Karma, the last music video, the last animated scene of the show, is Till smiling a genuine smile. Despite all of this there is still hope. For people.

What if Sunny was an actual Hikkikomori?

Before you guys go in the comments and type "But be already is one!" Just hear me out.

WARNING: THIS CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS TO THE GAME OMORI. THIS POST MENTIONS DEATH AND SUICIDE.

Before I start, what is a Hikkikomori? A Hikkikomori is a person who lives secluded in their house (most often staying in their bedroom excessively) and shuts them self from the outside world physically for at least six months. People living the Hikkikomori lifestyle tend to have a lack of motivation to do anything and disregard personal hygiene.

How does this relate to Sunny, you may ask.

Sunny is already a Hikkikomori as he shut himself away in his room for four years, never bothering to go outside unless necessary (which was never due to his mom doing the grocery shopping.) Then, if Sunny is already considered a Hikkikomori, what might I mean by the title?

Well there is one thing Sunny lacks, it's the knack of neglecting personal hygiene and not having any motivation to do.. well.. anything.

You see, in the game, Sunny is always depicted with a neat button down shirt and vest combo, paired with tan cargo shorts. However, if Sunny were to have the things cannon Sunny lacks, then major changes would be in effect, especially in Faraway.

Appearance:

As stated before, Sunny has an overall neat look about him. Yet if he were to neglect personal hygiene, Sunny would wear his old pajamas as they're the easiest to put on and wouldn't bother changing out of them. Upon opening the door, Kel would be whiplashed with the messy and unkempt hair Sunny would have and his very wrinkled clothing. Sunny wouldn't stink though, as his mom would pressure him to shower (thankfully).

Interactions:

Sunny wouldn't open the door, yet let's just say Kel's persistent knocking pisses him off and he reluctantly opens the door. Kel would feel awkward like canon, but that level of awkwardness would increase ten fold, as he sees Sunny messy and all over the place for the first time in his life. Kel would probably comment on how he looks like shit, then drag him to a mini adventure.

Upon meeting Aubrey and Basil, Aubrey would stared wide eyed, then scoff at how Sunny looks, her canon insults at Sunny would be tones down a bit as they would all be directed to Kel. When they fight,Sunny wouldnt bother taking his knife out of his pocket as he would just stand to the side, not wanting to participate. Kel would lose, but chuck the ball to Aubrey's nose, causing her nose TK bleed. Basil would stared wide eyed at Sunny as they go to his house and have dinner.

When meeting Hero, Hero would definitely fuss over Sunny, worried about his hygiene and his health as he looks like shit. Sunny would attempt to shake him off but fail tremendously.

Events:

Scenes such as Aubrey, Kel and Sunny's fight would be altered greatly. As stated earlier, Sunny would never bring his knife out to stab Aubrey as his mind is full of thoughts and he can't bring himself to do anything about it. It's Kel that draws blood buy hitting her nose.

When Kel and Sunny explore Faraway, Kel is the one leading as sunny immediately regrets his desicion and decides to head back to his house. Kel stops him and drags him along Faraway and his adventures.

Sunny would go and dive for basil, but he wouldn't get far as panic courses through his body like canon, yet he starts drowning much more quicker, promoting kel to save him instead and Hero there to help him get warm.

Sunny and Basils fight would be much more drastic as Sunny would use the knife he has as kel never knew he had it in his pocket. Sunny would still lose an eye but basil would also suffer from blood loss. One possible ending for this au is that Basil or Sunny dies from blood loss in this fight.

When they forgive Aubrey prior to the fight, Sunny would stand by and only reluctantly join the group hug.

Sunny wouldn't try and run errands. Kel would have to coerce him to.

Sunny wouldn't suicide by knife, instead another possible ending in this au is that Sunny dies from starvation or lack of hygiene as he bed rots and escapes in his room.

Hallucinations:

Sunny would most likely react the same to SOMETHING, however there is a possibility Sunny dies the same way as Mari did (via staircase) as his lack of hygiene and eating causes him to be weaker and lose grip during a bad hallucination, causing him to tumble backwards and crack his head.

Anyways that's all for the au rant as in writing this at 3:00 am and my brain can't think anymore lmao.

SUNNY ISN'T EMOTIONLESS 🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥

i see a lot of fanarts depicting sunny (especially in sunflower) as someone who doesnt reciprocate affection. this isn't trying to shit on the artists btw this is just a topic i am very passionate about

often sunny CAN be seen and mistaken an emotionless because he tends to be very stone-faced. however, this doesn't mean he's an unloving monster.

this isn't me trying to say "MAKE HIM JUMP FOR JOY AND LEAP!!" no, absolutely not, that's not his character. however he does crack small smiles that mean the world, and he can be affectionate, but it can look like he isn't if you're looking in the wrong places.

i'm someone who fw the autistic sunny headcanon, but even if you don't , this point still stands: people are different and therefore express love differently.

not everyone will display their love all over the top, not everyone is into the typical shows of affection. and that is OKAY!!! it is still love, even if how it is shown isn't the norm. this tends to be something neurodivergents struggle with, however it can be an issue for literally anyone ever.

i understand that this misconception probably comes from omori himself, who was BUILT to be as emotionless as possible as a coping mechanism. but that's different. sunny is not omori. sunny has feelings, sunny shows feelings. they can be similar but they are NOT the same.

my point is, let's get some more representation for different love styles! not everything has to be over the top, and it's not always super visible. sometimes the smallest things can be most meaningful.

Omori is the best game ever.

I've played this game around 4 times now. It's amazing and so sad with great relationships building with the NPCs as you continue. I wish their was another game or more to it but thanfully the manga was just released.

Actually, while we are at it, can we talk about how awful a lot of the fanbase treats Basil? My man can’t catch a break because almost everyone misinterprets him one way or another.

Where do I even start? Literally everything he does is taken the wrong way. There’s the people who characterize him as an obsessive yandere who only cares about Sunny and did everything in his power to isolate him. On the other hand, we have people who just remove one of the basic core aspects of him as a whole and make him an empty husk with no real personality.

Headacanon him however you want, but also try to understand him? I don’t know how people can say he only cares about Sunny when it’s clear he deeply appreciates his friends. He has a stronger bond with Sunny, but that doesn’t mean he’s a possessive and obsessed person who is toxic.

He definitely fucked up along the way, but his actions were never intended to hurt Sunny intentionally. He was in a panic and all he wanted was to keep his best friend safe. People constantly treat him as he’s a disgusting person for simple fact he shows mental illness signs, which is incredibly disheartening because there IS people in real life who act this way and can’t help it! What a relief it is to know people will treat me or my friends like this if we dare show an ounce of distress or panic!

Being mentally ill does not justify your actions, but this also doesn’t mean you are allowed to treat people who suffer from them like scum. People like Basil deserve to get help, to have people who support them so they can start healing. Basil clearly didn’t have that support, the only person that was there for him being his bedridden grandmother who he eventually lost.

And on the other hand, we have people who just choose to get rid of Basil’s personality altogether and characterise him as this character who is all suffering and trauma based off things that are NOT canon. It’s true that Basil’s life doesn’t exactly fit a “normal” childhood (having to live with his grandmother for unknown reasons) but that doesn’t immediately mean he is beyond traumatized? Basil is a little shy, sure, but a lot of people are. Basil used to be a smart and lively kid who loved his friends dearly. It wasn’t until AFTER the incident that he spiralled to the point he is where we see him in game.

People either disregard his trauma and paint him as a villain (let’s make one thing clear, there are NO villains in OMORI), or try to give him even more trauma for no apparent reason. All we know is that his parents aren’t really present in his life, and while that may bring some issues, from what we can see in cutscenes and the photo album, Basil lived a comfortable life surrounded by a loving family member and friends who cared about him.

You are free to explore Basil’s character however you like, but there’s a point where it no longer feels like Basil.

There is nothing wrong with showing his gentle side, just as how there’s nothing wrong to explore his unhealthy behaviour. But focusing on only one of the aspects of his entire self just turns him into a one-dimensional character with no redeemable qualities.

In my opinion, Basil is one of the best examples of a person struggling with mentally illness in media, yet people choose to ignore the complexity of his character to have either a selfish and dangerous yandere or a cute and shy femboy who’s only there to look pretty.

Write him like the mess he is. He is unstable. He is resentful, he is paranoid. That’s what makes Basil’s character so loved. That’s what makes him feel so relatable and human. Ignoring one side of his self takes away all of that. OMORI is a game about acceptance and forgiving. Why shouldn’t we apply those terms to their characters? It’s rather hypocritical for the fanbase to treat Sunny as a poor boy who only did what he did due to stress and trauma and then mark Basil as a psychopath with no redeemable features as if he wasn’t also a scared child who witnessed his very best friend push his sister down the stairs.

hey. hey. hey. hey. hey. sunny saw mari and hero's relationship as the definition of love. its the only really prominent relationship in headspace and they're so clearly perfect for each other that its impossible not to ship. look at them! they're obviously in love! that's how sunny has grown up viewing love: as his sister and her not-so-secret boyfriend. the guilt of 'ruining' their perfect relationship eats him alive and he crafts them so carefully in his dream world, with arms born to hold each other and eyes created to gaze at one another. which also gives insight on how he views his parents relationship considering that's the love people usually grow up seeing. in sunny's mind it didn't hold a candle to the pure young love hero and mari had for each other. hey is this thing on

something i love about omori is how it shows every character doing something bad or being an asshole at some point.

for instance, while playing faraway town (at least for me) it's apparent that both kel and aubrey were being kinda dicks at some point. aubrey bullied basil and was just kinda mean, and kel was also rude by barging in on the church service and refusing to understand aubrey.

basil, hero, and mari all did bad things too. basil covered up mari's death and lied to everyone about it, hero shut himself away and ended up snapping at kel. mari pushed sunny far too much because of her perfectionism.

i love this because it's something adamantly shown throughout the game, how people make mistakes and can be forgiven for it. as in, showing sunny that he's not the only one who's done something wrong, and that he can be forgiven too.

SUNFLOWER RANT :pp bc I feel like it

imo sunflower is one of the least toxic Omori ships, NOW BEFORE YALL ATTACK ME‼️ ppl always say their biggest problem is co-dependency, which I think becomes less of a problem after the good/true ending, yk with therapy and them being able to keep in touch and talk abt things. Another thing ppl say is how basil stabbed Sunny’s eye and yea, thats obviously a bad thing, but based on the secret ending Sunny seemed to have forgiven basil already. Basil wasn’t trying to hurt Sunny, he was trying to protect Sunny from “something” and missed, Sunny knew Basil’s intentions weren’t malicious. Also a problem I have with suntan is Sunny and kel were almost bothers, like- Mari and hero were DEFINITELY gonna get married, and I Js feel like it would’ve been weird, also personally the ship is kinda toxic, like it’s basically just kel comforting Sunny I feel, and idk but that’s Js sad to me🙁 so yes sunflower is my favorite silly little Omori ship, I love these silly gays:33
