I just finished watching the most Reylo movie ever. It’s a Russian film called On-Drakon or I am Dragon in English. It’s about a dragon who steals a bride and basically is super angsty about being a dragon. He and the kidnapped girl spend an undefined amount of time on the island where he lives—which is a giant ass dragon skeleton—and they fall in love. Dragon man is still angsty about being a dragon. It wasn’t particularly plot heavy, but it’s a dragon romance and I can easily see Ben Solo as an angsty dragon man. It’s on YouTube and I think it has an English dub as well as sub so check it out I guess.

Before She Ignites was very familiar. All in all, the writing was well-done and engaging. I particularly enjoyed the setting of The Pit —I have a strange love for stories that take place in prisons, and Jodi Meadows absolutely crushed it! Despite the confines, there was never a dull moment in the story. Political intrigue, deceit,and betrayal kept me hooked on the steadily-advancing plot. The characters and premise were very run-of-the-mill fantasy, but hey, formulas work for a reason.

So why 3 stars? Unfortunately, the story just didn’t spark for me. I enjoyed the moments, but I also felt as if I’d seen most of them before. Particularly in the first half of the book I saw a lot of similarities to the lesser known movie On-Drakon. A lot of others have also noticed similarities to The Mortal Instrument Series and even Melisandre from GOT (lol). That being said, Meadows is clearly a very creative and original author. If anything, these similarities are just reflective of common fantasy tropes.

Overall, Before She Ignites was a good book. It just wasn’t a book that stood out of the crowd for me. I would recommend this book to dragon enthusiasts and people that haven’t yet over-saturated themselves with YA fantasy.
