The Great Tamer. Dance performance, 2017

Involving 10 performers [credited as co-producers] on stage, The Great Tamer takes shape around the notion that human life can be seen as a journey of discovery, an exploration for hidden treasure, an inner archaeological excavation for meaning [through the paradox]

It was his first international co-commissioned work including the Festival d’Avignon. “The Great Tamer” toured for 2 and 1/2 years through 4 continents, 23 countries, and 38 cities. Special award, Europe Theatre Prize, Rome, 2017

Papaioannou was nominated in 2019 for the Olivier award for “outstanding achievement in dance”

Onassis STEGI is the place where contemporary CULTURE meets aesthetics and science. The place where courageous, restless, daring Greek artists find the means to showcase their work; the place where international collaborations are nurtured; the stage on which the boundaries between science, art, society, education, learning and politics are renegotiated. Above all, Onassis STEGI is the space where questions are asked which feed the mind and spirit, which query givens, with this ideal ultimate goal: generating actions, interventions and ideas which shape and shake society.

The Onassis STEGI building hosts theatrical and musical productions, film screenings, art and digital shows, but its activities and central concept extend beyond the four walls of the center on Syngrou Avenue.

Onassis Foundation to Fund Installation of New Elevator and Lights on the Acropolis

Antonis Papadimitriou, the President of the Onassis Foundation, met with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at Maximos Mansion on Wednesday morning in Athens.

It was made public following their meeting that the Foundation will fund the construction of a new, state-of-the-art elevator on the slopes of the hill of the Acropolis.

The Foundation will also pay for a new system of lights which will highlight the important monuments on the hill, including the Parthenon, against the night sky of Athens.

The current, problematic elevator which is meant to assist people who would have difficulties in walking up the steep hill of the Acropolis will be completely replaced.

The new lift will be much friendlier to people using wheelchairs, helping them to easily and safely ascend to the top of the ”sacred rock” of Athens.

The new lighting of the monuments of the Acropolis will be based on the already-existing arrangement, which was put in place in 2004, just ahead of the Olympic Games of Athens.

Building

The Onassis Stegi boasts 18,000 sq. m. of interior space

The foundations of the Onassis Stegi were laid in Athens in 2004. The construction of the building was exclusively funded and overseen by the Onassis Foundation. The Onassis Stegi was built on a privately-owned 3,000 sq. m. plot on Syngrou Avenue, which is bounded by four roads and covers an entire city block. The Onassis Stegi boasts 18,000 sq. m. of interior space.

Abyss

At the Onassis Library, the rising composer and pianist Dimitris Skyllas interprets parts from his "Abyss" composition on the historical piano, which Maria Callas used to play when she was on the yacht "Christina". Invaluable cultural and historical treasures create the setting for the soloist: Charta of Greece by Rigas Velestinlis, artworks from El Greco, Poulakis, Halepas, and more than 3,000 books that represent the spiritual wealth of Greece from the 15th to the 19th century.
