Paul McCartney talks Sex with David Litchfield while editing One Hand Clapping

The edit became bohemian refuge for Paul, not only from the responsibilities of whipping a new band into shape but also from the day-to-day domestic demands on a dutiful husband and father. Famous faces would come and go from a makeshift edit suite in Litchfield's back bedroom (Neil Young, Litchfield recalled, once turned up with a cricket ball of cocaine in his coat pocket).

As McCartney and Litchfield reviewed the tapes, no topic was off limits. When conversation turned to Beatlemania, and more specifically, notches on Paul's bedpost, Litchfield asked, "Ever had a threesome?" "Try a fivesome," Paul joked. Yet Litchfield was struck by Paul's concern, if not insecurity, about his role as a partner within his marriage, and his awareness that one-night stands with groupies were one thing; maintaining a healthy, long-term sexual relationship was another.
