"We started with one woman, Auma Lucy, and began to grow:

28: # of women trained in our tailoring programs in Northern Uganda. From tailors in Gulu market to women in displacement camps to former combatants and victims, we identified women who most needed employment.

12: # of women and men we hired when they lost their jobs due to a local factory closing. More than 3,000 women came to Kampala in 2002 to join the apparel industry. When the biggest factory closed, we brought together a small group to continue working - in much better conditions."

One Mango Tree uses a fair trade model to provide income generating opportunities for women in impoverished and conflict-ridden areas of the globe. Their first project is now underway in northern Uganda, a region devastated by more than twenty years of armed conflict.

  They believe that economic empowerment provides the foundation necessary for achieving sustainable peace and development. Theirr model revolves around this belief, going beyond fair trade to create jobs and improve quality of life in some of the most challenging environments in the world.

  They find talented artisans who are living in some of the most difficult environments in the world and work with them to hone their skills and create products you'll love. Whether it's simple sewing, intricate weaving, new dye techniques or state-of-the-art apparel construction, they train them in the skills they need to create beautiful products.

  They set up access to export markets - to sustain not only their livelihoods, but the very survival of their craft work through direct sale to customers through their online store, wholesale distribution through retail partners, and private label work for other brands who are seeking ethical artisan production.

Last week I received this beautiful Organic Cotton Dress by One Mango Tree and it is perfect! The dress is made of 100% Organic Cotton Jersey and I love everything about it. The beautiful simple cut is super comfy and exactly how I would design a dress myself. The fabric feels light and soft on your skin and over the last week I have worn it out to party, to the park and the length makes it even wearable for biking.
