Tonight was taco night. They left me one taco.
Austin Food Trailers Introduces the Midway Food Park
Austin Food Trailers is getting real excited this week about the August 15th (Thursday) grand opening of Austin's newest food trailer park, the Midway Food Park. Located at 1905 South Capital of Texas Highway (in the 78746 zip code), Midway will bring a much-needed mobile food emporium to the southern Cap Texas expanse. This basically makes up for Austin recently losing the food trucks at the NATY, although Midway is located a good drive from that departed locale's North Austin location. West Austin is an under served area, however, so demand should be high.
The food trailers stationed at the Midway Food Park are One Taco, The Seedling Truck, and Trailer Food Tuesday veteran, Dock and Roll Diner. While the selection is limited, there is such a wide variety of food choices represented by this trio - not to mention deep menus - that most tastes will leave the food park satisfied. It's also necessary to note that the powers that be at Midway are currently in negotiations to bring several more food trucks to their space. So stay tuned for news on what trucks sign up next! Also, in a classic, free spirited Austin move, a few spaces will be left continually open as a form of "auditions" for traveling food trailers.
If you're not familiar with the trucks that will be operating out of the Midway Food Park, here's a quick rundown:
The Seedling Truck is a creation of Austin catering company Royal Fig. It touts itself as "a food truck that brings the Royal Fig catering's simple, seasonal, fresh philosophy to the public." The Seedling Truck serves seasonal comfort food, and the rotating menu includes items for Sunday brunch, dinner and breakfast. There is also a kids menu for all the Austin families who swing by. A big selling point for The Seedling Truck is that their entire menu is taken from local farmers and producers, so it's a food truck that's integrally connected to the ATX food culture.
One Taco is an "urban eatery" that specializes, obviously, in a classic Tex-Mex setup that is so well-known to Austin. Online, this is an exceedingly sophisticated operation that offers online ordering and catering services. Highlights of the One Taco menu include a "create your own" breakfast taco deal and taco options that comprise beef, chicken, al pastor and vegetarian categories.
Dock and Roll Diner is perhaps making the biggest entrance of all the original Midway food trailers. They will be open on the first day of operation, which is Thursday, August 15th, if you forgot. A comment on Midway's Facebook page, left by Dock and Roll on Tuesday reads: "we serve a variety of lobster rolls, salads and a few other sandwiches. We also serve lobster mac'n'cheese, homemade potato chips, tater tots, several different slaws, elote and an elote salad. We also have specials. Hope you'll come see us!"
Austin Food Trailers needs to check out the Midway Food Park soon. We will, and as it continues, hopefully, to grow, we'll return. It all starts Thursday. Check out the Austin Food Trailer Facebook Pagefor updates on this and other food parks around the city!
