I think I’ve mentioned that I have a lot of books going at the same time: physical book, kindle book, audiobook, etc. today I finished my current physical book, One Word Kill by Mark Lawrence.
I gave it 5 stars on goodreads. The back cover starts out, “In January 1986, fifteen-year-old Nick Hayes discovers he’s dying.” Fun fact: in January 1986 I was 15 (no health problems though). It’s like this book was written for me. It’s a coming-of-age story that combines 80s nostalgia, Dungeons and Dragons, time travel, quantum mechanics, a great plot and great characters.
Can’t wait to read the sequels!

Blending Science Fiction and the tragedy of cancer, One Word Kill by Mark Lawrence tells the story of teenage Nick Hayes. Nick is relatively ordinary except for his recent diagnosis. Despite chemo treatments destroying his body slowly, Nick continues to play Dungeons and Dragons weekly with his friends and with Mia, the newest group member and more importantly a girl. When a bald man with an uncanny resemblance to Nick shows up, predicts some dice rolls, and asks for Nick's help to save Mia... Well how can he refuse?
I found Nick a wonferfully compelling character and I really enjoyed how mundane the story was around the SciFi elements. The story was easy to follow and the writing wonderfully well done!

I really did enjoy this book thoroughly. The writing style surprised me in its ability to convincingly portray a fifteen year old as well as keep up an absorbing story. There was also a surprising amount of empathy and compassion written into the little details, the side characters, and the way Nick views the world. Though it had no bearing on the plot, seeing Nick express compassionate views about others was a nice addition to his character development. I was also worried that much of the book would include pop culture references to reassert the time period, but luckily despite the odd reference here or there the author definitely knows that pop culture references don't automatically make a book a hit. Ultimately, I found this an entertaining read that shouldn't take up too much time, and would work as a decent short read if you're feeling burned out.
