When 360 degree video cameras first came out I really didn't get them. I found the view really confusing and not conducive to watching videos, especially with the output people were putting out there of mini-world views. They didn't feel lifelike and they just felt odd.
However, I recently came across some video of cyclings using 360 degree videos that give the illusion of drone tracking whilst they are riding and now the capability starts to make a LOT of sense to me. Being able to reframe the shot after the even is awesome. For a while now I have wanted to get this type of video effect whilst I ride.
This kind of tracking capability is done as a result of stitching the images from 2 lenses together so it makes the selfie stick (which can be mounted pretty much any way you want) invisible. The only giveaway is the shadow - Go to 5m 7s in the video above to see what I mean.
However, the effect is pretty incredible and you can get a full wrap-around pan effect.
The alternative is to purchase a drone and basically fly it in tracking mode. Some of the footage you can get from this setup are pretty spectacular as can be seen in this Mavic educational video.
For me, it seems to be a toss up on a number of different things.
Budget - There's not a huge amount in it but the 360 camera is definitely cheaper than a drone
Portability - The 360 camera wins out here too
Close up vs Wide angle views - This really depends on your wants. Close up action shots or beautiful scenery shooting
Battery Life - The camera wins out here too
It's not really a hugely evaluative breakdown but more of a sense check for me. I'm really keen on the Insta360 One X2, but probably need to offload the GoPro Hero 5 I have to justify the kind of outlay I am looking at. I'm not in a rush but I would love to get something like that one day soon.
If you're tempted then check out the latest deals on the Insta360 store.
