One at Bat

Here is the story of Adam Greenberg, who was hit in the head in his first and (so far) only major league plate appearance. Yes, Greenberg's story seems unfair and tragic. I was all set to sign the online petition letter until I read the letter.

Getting Greenberg another at-bat doesn't guarantee that he'll get an official at-bat. He could be walked or he might hit a sac fly or (heaven forbid) even be hit again. Then what? Give him another at-bat?

There are plenty of guys who were this close, and there are plenty of guys out there who deserve a first chance to fulfill their dreams too. I am sympathetic, I am empathetic, and I am rooting for Greenberg to get another opportunity. But not for sympathy's sake. He has to earn it just like everybody else. If he can do it, then that would be a truly heartwarming story.
