I'll show you fear in a fistful of dust
I always wished it were fistful, instead of handful.
Anyway, I feel as though I owe you all an explanation; I'm sure most of you out there have noticed the flood of posts and volley of conversation between myself and a semi-anonymous poster, Eridanos.
Eridanos, the river Apollo's son fell into after he stole his father's chariot and attempted to drive the sun across the sky. Nearly plunged the world into darkness. The metaphor is not lost on me, though many of Eridanos' messages are. I feel like I need to go back and explain what's been happening the past few days, partly for my own sake. I initially thought that this Eridanos was just some reader with a bad sense of humor, someone who was trying to have some fun. I thought that maybe they were bored, or trying to mock me, or whatever. But the messages and the puzzles have been getting increasingly more serious, and I'm starting to think that this person - this Eridanos - knows something about me and knows something about Him. I've started making an archive of everything I've received from this person, which I may post if I have the time. I'm practically living at McDonald's and Starbucks right now, anywhere that has free wi-fi. I feel as though I've been driving in an unending ouroboros. Back and forth over my own tail.
The first comments from Eridanos appeared here: http://awake-alone-unafraid.tumblr.com/post/9970875128/i-believe-it-says-there-is-no-time-for#disqus_thread
I'm no good at code, and didn't figure out their code (which I use in the top comment) on my own. Mailinator has a feature through which you can check any account's inbox, and since the comments were registered through the mailinator account, well, I checked it. There were a few messages, which may or may not have been addressed to me. The first read something like 'The Slender Man Can Never Die'. You'll see I respond to this in the comments.
I noticed that the e-mails had been sent from a related g-mail account. After a bit of poking around, I found that the g-mail password reset was linked to the mailinator account. Maybe I was in the wrong. But I reset the password, changed it, and accessed the g-mail account as well. In the inbox, I found a cipher to the original code, as well as a modified image of the picture of my bedroom door. I'll try to post this if I can. Later, a file was also sent to the gmail account, named "dont". I tried opening it, but it was password protected, and none of the passwords I tried worked, even though I felt that they were recommended by Eridanos themselves.
The code read "iknowwhatyoudiditzappedyouawaywhatnow?" I responded in code, curious now. Eridanos and I communicated through comments for a bit longer, and they posted another code. Frustrated and unable to solve it, I decided to ignore it, once again chalking it up to someone on the internet trying to mess with me. But the messages continued, through comments and questions, all of which you can see posted on my tumblr. The next day, however, there was a riddle posted in the mailinator:
My form is stunning to the charmed sight, My habit jovial, my colour gold or white; When ladies constitutionalize, I, without pride, A loyal friend, am close by their side; Near their being, I constantly remain, A favorite servant, bound with a silver chain; And though I can both articulate and go alone, yet, a mystery to myself are my motions.
The answer, picked apart after much time and many endless miles, turned out to be "pocket watch". Going off of a wild guess, I plugged the word into the zip file, which opened and read this:
I have no finish line for you, Esse. Find it yourself. NO I WILL NOT ALLOW THIS kill it, esse. kill LEAVE GO LEAVE GO GO GO please please leave please remember what he meant to you remember the warm feeling he gave you when he looked in your eyes you he you it took this from you. took it FROM US.
This bothers me. The messages, the codes, are all beginning to bother me very deeply. I'm not sure if this person wants to help me, or deter me. Maybe it is all some elaborate scheme. But I think that I can use them, whether they're willing to help me or not. I just need help to get there first.
I've been trying to work out the second code, the one left in the original thread of comments. The comment read this:
I have fed younothing. Find your ownway. Youcarry a heavy watch, littleduckling. Seeit doesn't weigh youdown. lot anok wok wo aonn ow
I've spent as much time possible this past weekend trying to figure it out. It doesn't use the cipher originally used, and while I'm sure it's related to the other comments they've left, I literally cannot figure it out. I've tried using a Caesar decoder, as well as a Vigenere and Bifid and I don't even remember how many different types of established codes.
So, once again, I need your help. You, whoever is out there. Sebastian, or Tereza, or reddit, or the internet - anyone. I'm not good at this, and not for lack of trying. But I'm beginning to think that this Eridanos is more important than I'd like. Knows more than they need to know. I really, really don't like this. I had nightmares all night.
EDIT:
I also received a comment with a picture on one of the more recent posts. The picture, one of a street light, was also in the gmail account inbox. The file's name was "comegetme" and when I looked at the metadata - which I've just recently learned to do - it included an address for a corner in Georgia. If I can post it, I'd like to see what you think.
