Summertime Madness - Schlitterbahn - Travel Diaries
The ice has thawed, snow boots have been packed away and the thermostat is inching closer to triple digits. Old Man Winter has made his exit. No better sign of summer approaching than a calendar full of events weekend after weekend. No better start to a jam packed calendar than with those you love.
This weekend was the annual Schlitterbahn reunion weekend that our Didi (meaning older sister) organizes each summer. For those that aren’t familiar with Schlitterbahn – imagine every water park you’ve been to. Now, imagine every water park you’ve been to, on STEROIDS, yes steroids. It’s so big that you have to be shuttled on a bus from one end of the park to the other end just to get through it all. It’s so big that you don’t even have to leave the resort when the park closes. They have their own accommodations in the park!
For those that know me, know that I run screaming bloody murder from any water activity outside of taking a bath – to which my OCD cleanliness will never argue. As we all know, spending time with those we love also requires us to often times do things we wouldn’t normally be found doing in our day to day lives. When I RSVP’D back in March a big fat YES, Didi promised me a weekend I would never forget with the best of times. As I sit here typing this entry, she held true to every word.
Below are a few highlights of the weekend and bullets to prepare yourself if you are planning a trip to Schlitterbahn in the near future:
Be prepared to get wet – not soak your feet at the end of the pool as you catch up on life with your cousin wet – but drenched to your bones wet.
Be prepared to face all your fears of water – Oh yes – let’s just say, I found myself on rides called “Raging River”, Cliffhanger”, “The Falls”, “White Water Rapids” – fears faced and clearly it was not my time to meet my creator, came out with all limbs in tact and a side of confidence boosted!
**Special Shoutout to To all my fellow ride partners, Lee, Corby, Didi, Rupa, Meera, Kunal, Jaykishan – thank you for saving my life over and over as I fumbled my way through every ride I hopped on. **
Be prepared to overcome hypothermia – heated and treated water – I don’t think so – Schlitterbahn water is all natural direct from the river – no such thing as heated water here – so yes, when I jumped on my first ride, aside from my fear of water I also experienced my other nuance in life – being cold! The sheer shock of the cold water was enough to freeze any fear of water I may have had.
Be prepared to lose your hat, jewelry, sunglasses or anything of value that you thought “oh I’ll be fine” – Bye Bye Fendi Sunglasses, may you rest in peace at the bottom of the river rapids.
Be prepared to spend the night on the resort – By far the most genius idea – we rented two 10 sleeper cabins right on the resort. Wake up in the morning, throw on your bathing suit and walk on over the rides.
But more than anything – Be prepared for some serious fun!!
This was by far the best three days that I have had in the longest time and I wouldn’t have spent it with anyone else. Nothing warms my heart more than to say from when I was three at Disneyworld to Schlitterbahn, Didi has always held my hand and took care of me. Sorry Allstate, but I’m only in good hands with my Didi.
Time to unpack and repack for next weekend: Boston!
