Programs I use and recommend
While on the subjects of programs, insane prices and subscriptions, here are a few programs I use that are affordable and onetime payment.
Writing - Scrivener $49
Windows / MacOS
This is a professional writing program, with available templates for scripts, plays etc. I mainly love it because you can organise your work by chapters, write notes, write chapter notes, have folders with characters and research notes... and all that in one file. It also has a distraction free mode where your screen is just the text you're writing; as well as multiple dark modes.
There's also a free 30 day trial so you don't have to buy it right away.
Drawing - Clip Studio Paint $50
Windows / MacOS
Formerly known as Manga Studio, Clip Studio Paint is a professional drawing program that a lot of comic pro artists are using lately as it beats Photoshop in all but one thing (the CMYK mode is still lacking a bit). Recently, Clip has added subscriptions as they can't finance regular updates with onetime payments - and this is something I support because they made it optional. If you don't need the 3D models and other similar advanced features you can get the fixed license for just $50 and use the programs for years.
There is also a version for tablets but it's subscription based and imho the UI was a bit too cluttered last time I tried it.
Drawing - Procreate $10
iPad OS
I think everyone and their mom knows about this one. It's for iPad only but if you can get your hands on one (Christmas deals, used... it even works on newer Air and Mini models), Procreate costs only $10. Yes, none of us has any idea how the hell it's still profitable as you get all updates for free, including new program versions, but it's a cool portable program with a friendly UI for a tablet device. It can't do as much as Clip Studio Pro can, but it's quite nice for painting. The only downside to it is the limit in layers that depends on your iPad model and the file resolution and size.
