Jeff takes a deep breath, running a hand over his slightly tangled, uncombed hair. He’s hardly taken care of himself lately, obsessed with the completion of his months-long project. It’s taken so long for him to reach his goal, but it suddenly feels near-tangible, but not entirely yet. He’s failed enough times to take this potential success with a grain of salt until he can definitively prove that he’s finally done it right. His tracker-tracer device has been tweaked, scrapped, rebuilt, and tested numerous times in order to properly read Dr. Andonut’s signature, searching for his presence across infinite timelines, and, finally, it’s giving him a consistent reading from one particular timeline.
When Jeff ruled out that this was just a fluke, it took every inch of his willpower not to rush off to find out for himself. He has to remind himself that Dr. Andonuts was taken, and to rush into an unknown situation without any help or preparation would be stupidly reckless. He can’t allow his father to get hurt or for this mission to fail, assuming the tracker-tracer really is right this time. That’s when, after time for celebration and for intense panic, Jeff called Ness for his help. He figured his friend would be willing to help him; Paula and Pu would happily help, too, and he knew that, but they were busy kids, and Jeff figured Ness might wind up being the least busy in the end.
Now, the two were standing outside Dr. Andonuts’s long since abandoned lab, left untouched for about two years now since he’s been gone. The only person who ever came by was Jeff himself, for working on this massive project could not be contained in his dorm room with Tony, although he did miss his roommate’s support while he worked on it. Tweaking the Phase Distorter until it no longer spaghettified carbon lifeforms was difficult, too, but Jeff was pretty sure he’d done it right, and, well, if he didn’t, then they’d know pretty fast by their destroyed bodies. He was relatively confident in it, enough to ask Ness to come along with.
Jeff’s feelings are over the top now, an uncomfortable mixture of excitement, terror, and sadness that he hadn’t yet recovered from. He tries to keep his composure for Ness as he shows his friend the screen of his tracker-tracer, pointing at his results, adjusting his glasses with his free hand.
“...As you can see, each time I scan for Dr. Andonuts-- o- or I mean da- well, never mind-- I keep getting the same result. It’s tracing back to one particular timeline. While this thing has been wrong... 100% of the time so far out of my dozens of attempts, this is the first time I’ve got a consistent answer this many times in a row.” He refreshes it several times as he speaks, demonstrating the same, likely incomprehensible results to Ness. “Ergo, I have reason to believe this might be ‘it’, sincerely. So... thank you for helping me. I hope I’m not wrong-- I’d hate to waste your time... especially since we don’t get to see each other as often anymore.”
Jeff then places the machine back in his over-the-shoulder bag. He suddenly feels a bit stupid over all this, that self-doubt creeping into him. What if he’s wrong like he’s been every single time before now? What if something goes wrong? What if he never sees Dr. Andonuts again...? He shyly drops his gaze to the powdery snow beneath their shoes, some of it blowing in the light wind.
“You can back out of this, if you’d like. I understand this is much to ask...”
