Ingredients: 4 large potatoes, thinly sliced. 2 onions, thinly sliced. 2 tablespoons butter. 2 cloves garlic, minced. 1 cup grated Gruyere cheese. 1 cup heavy cream. Salt and pepper to taste. Fresh thyme leaves for garnish.
Instructions: Preheat the oven to 375F 190C. In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. Add minced garlic to the caramelized onions and cook for an additional 2 minutes. Grease a baking dish and layer half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom. Spread half of the caramelized onion mixture over the potatoes, then sprinkle half of the grated Gruyere cheese on top. Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, caramelized onions, and Gruyere cheese. Pour the heavy cream over the layers evenly. Season with salt and pepper. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown. Garnish with fresh thyme leaves before serving.
