Reading Higurashi Bonus Arcs

Key: comments added in <these> are from December 27th, 2025, when I finished all the arcs. I started this on October 8th, 2023, so I’ve matured since then, so I find a lot of my older commentary… cringy.

Onisarashi-hen:

I began this one before but never finished it, so I’ll read it now. Ah, Kimiyoshi? She’s the daughter of him? Distant relative? OH THIS IS THE ONE WITH THE LESBIAN. (Btw, I’m pretty sure my post got tagged as mature because of this. Thanks tumblr.)

First off, was Haruko or whatever her name was, the mother, was her mother just in the bathroom doing her… weird hobby the whole time? Why didn’t- okay first off, I could’ve just said “Natsumi’s grandmother,” and second… Why didn’t Natsumi stop her grandma? I know she was scared but I would’ve done something even as a scared kid. Madoka Magica?!

How would “Onozaki” and “Furudate” get mixed up? Doesn’t Japanese write different surnames with kanji? The kanji for Sonozaki is 園崎. The kanji for Onozaki is written as “琴浦” at least from the one character with the name I found. I know surnames can be written with kanji that are differing, but still. Rika’s surname is written as “琴浦” but Furudate is written as “古舘” in the instance I found. It shares a kanji in common with Rika’s name though… well never mind. I just realised they’re going by pronunciation alone. <lemon pretends she understands Japanese #1. Well I guess I ID’d as non-binary from 2019 until early 2025 so… they? is referring to my past self as she misgendering?? Idk. I’ll ask myself permission. Ok I permit myself to call my past self she. Wow thank you lemon. You’re welcome lemon.>

I think… I think Natsumi did nothing wrong. Her grandma's behaviour would’ve gotten worse. I’m not saying it was the best option though, but she was a scared child. I don’t blame her for what she did. And I mean… holy shit. Did Ryukishi- someone else wrote this I bet. No? It was him? Why did it have to be puppies? Like… ugh… I know it’s a series about murder and all but it makes me uncomfortable.

Also! There IS a console version of this arc! I thought it was in my head, but nope, it exists! I didn’t fully understand this arc, but it was okay. 3/5

Nekogoroshi:

Did I somehow miss this in 2018 when I consumed all Higurashi anime, even the OVAS? Huh. Well, it seems to be lost media. Rather, hard to find. And it doesn’t seem to have much going for it. Darn my completionism. I’ll have to pass ha. <media I can’t find = lost media. lemon logic #1>

Kataribanashi:

Let’s start with Sukekomashi. Who illustrated this? It’s really interesting.

Oh for fuck sake. Are we seriously going to have a 14-year-old flirting with Satoko? Really? The “it’s a blunder in my 100 years” line implies this arc actually did happen.

Keiichi, roleplaying as Satoko’s older brother is the least of your problems when it comes to “marrying” her. SHES A CHILD. It would be unusual to take on Satoshi’s role with her and do that. But it IS WAY WORSE what you’re doing now!

They’re using their sapphic power to defeat Keiichi.

Satokoishi. I can’t believe they did nice-guy Teppei TWICE. Ridiculous. I didn’t like Sotsu & Meguri’s interpretations of nice guy Teppei. I don’t know why but it was like we were meant to feel like he was some uwu wholesome baby being used by the evil Satoko. It works better here. Not a masterpiece, and not a redemption, but alright.

This chapter is about the bargain sale auction.

Satoko shares something in common with the Kimiyoshi’s ala Onisarashi: being unfairly discriminated against because of the actions of few. Butterfly Dream: Endless Nightmare, huh? Weird chapter.

RikoSato wars. Good news! Satoko WILL spend 100 years with you, Rika, in both Sotsu and Meguri. Yay.

Kyute Lessons From Hell. Rena is brutal. She tore Satoko’s project apart. Sorry for the Sniperwolf-level commentary here. I have no opinions on this. “Mii-chan, I’d appreciate it if you didn’t steal my catchphrase.” XD. Usoda!

So, this is the “ideal” world arc, right? Where Satoko is kinda mean but Satoshi is alive, and Shion and Mion never switched places? I remember this arc vaguely. Hanyuu did it to teach Rika a lesson. Maybe to not give up or to take a world for granted?

Rika doesn’t know what a Fragment is. Since when? It might’ve been Bern speaking in Matsuribayashi-hen. Did I ever mention I picked up vocal tics from Higurashi? I’m autistic, and it’s been a thing for years. Sometimes I say ‘mii’ or ‘meep’ when I don’t know what to say. It’s kinda awkward. I used to say ‘kanakana’ too. The only thing I didn’t pick up was ‘nanodesu’ which I think translates to ‘so it is.’ I used to learn Japanese before I dropped it to focus on Esperanto. ‘Desu’ means it is if I recall. So like, 三わしんです… I don’t remember the phrase, but I’m trying to say “It is three o’clock.” I don’t think ‘shin’ is correct… it’s two anyway. I just know the ‘wa’ particle is used before the time. Ahhh, Japanese. People say that learning Esperanto has no use, meanwhile they learn Latin. Does Rika have to get rid of Oka? I think I remember this, so that’s my guess. Her name is Oka, right? By the way, Oka means mother if I recall. I may or may not have a character in my novel3 that has a pun name referencing the fact she is a mom who dies… <Ouka but close enough… and I actually ended up releasing that book… I do regret calling the mother character what I did. however it was kind of funny ngl. The draft I had at the time I wrote this was so ass btw. Btw, that novel was originally 160k words but I cut it down to 100~k. My current WIP was originally 190k but I cut it down to 76k and now it’s back to 80k. I usually end up cutting a lot of stuff out, even stuff I like. :(( whole character arcs… but it is filler… so it has to go… or even if it isn’t filler and developing a character I would fixate on random ones. for example, my third book has a cult leader character who originally had way way more going on and a whole arc about learning to be authentic but ultimately cut 90% of the content was cut… because it’s a side character…>

So I kinda predicted this. I noticed the villagers using “Rika-san” and “Furude-san.” They usually used “Furude-chama” in the previous fragments including Matsuribayashi-hen… Chama is a childish way of pronouncing Sama. It’s similar to Rena saying ‘Sho Kyute’ in the English translation. Sama means god. That’s why no one respects Rika. She isn’t the reincarnation of Oyashiro-sama, Ouka is. I need to google her name… wait, really? Oh wow, thanks for the spoiler wiki. Wait wait I’m so confused. Ouka got rid of Hanyuu? That’s what the wiki says. But… isn’t Rika the 8th descendant? So in most worlds, Ouka should be the 7th. How could Hanyuu be Ouka’s mother if Ouka is either the 7th or 8th descendant of Hanyuu? <how did I remember that…>

Told you. I could suspect Shion was Mion in this arc. For starters, Mion wouldn’t tease Rika or ignore her. Mion would’ve done a lot to help her. I’m not saying that to reduce Mion to good and Shion to bad, I’m just using Shion’s own words. She’s more ruthless than Mion and blunt. That’s why I foresaw this. It’s also clear Maebara Keiichi didn’t transfer because he didn’t sin, but apparently, that wasn’t obvious to the 100-year-time looper. I wouldn’t choose that world, I mean, the village is still going to be submerged. Rika and the others would move out of Hinamizawa. It wouldn’t be the same. <lemon pretends to be smart #1>

“Being left in a forked road without any guidance, without any hint… is what life is. To lazily keep on choosing the right hand side is ok. To suitably decide it with a ‘boutaoshi’ game is okay too. I’m only 8 minutes in and can we get Ryukishi a wellness check, please? Like I’m genuinely concerned. Why is he doing this? These are KIDS. <I saw people on r/higurashinonakakoroni genuinely mass downvote someone because they were trying to get into the VN’s and thought the fan service with the inappropriateness were uncomfortable because ‘oh it’s just a part of the culture’ and ‘it’s a part of the bait and switch’ and one that straight up says it’s ’a part of Japanese culture.’

No it fucking isn’t. Otaku culture is not Japanese culture, it’s a niche subculture. And then someone else calls them a puriteen. Last I checked not wanting children to be displayed in inappropriate situations isn’t puritan, do you even know what a puritan is? Puritans are the “no hand holding before marriage” types.

Anyway back on topic, take this with a grain of salt because I’ve mostly heard non-Japanese people claim this (unsurprisingly I don’t speak Japanese…) but I’ve heard Japanese people actually frown on this sort of shit. Because no shit?? It’s fucking awkward as hell. Why would a grown mf want to be reading these scenes. It’s not even that type of VN. Rena really said “I know what you are” to Miyo. I had a feeling Rena would fall in love with Ooishi, I just knew it, so predictable, Ryukushi. Speaking of, I know “Ryukishi07” can also be read as RyukishiReina, but I wonder how. Let’s see. 零 means 0. It’s the only kanji for zero. I think anyway. The kanji for seven is usually 七. 零 is a valid kanji for rei, apparently. 七 can also just be na. So yeah, it works. But I’m only using predictive text and Google Translate, so maybe not. <lemon pretends to understand Japanese… uh… #2? #3?>

Not gonna lie, I usually find Higurashi’s humour unfunny, but Keiichi yawning and swallowing it kinda made me “haha” a little. Just a little exhale. <because it is unfunny most of the time sorry not sorry anime humor is not funny>

Did Ryukishi write this? He sure loves waffling. Anywho, are they siblings? That’s my work-in theory. Work-in? Working. Because they both have fathers who died in the Hinamizawa Disaster. Hmm, maybe I should call this arc Sanyoigoshi hen to distinguish it from Yoigoshi’s other arc.

Like, if I say Yoigoshi, people won’t know if I mean the manga or the console version. So, when referring to the console arc, maybe I’ll say Sanyoigoshi, and I’ll say Yoigoshi to reference the console one. ‘San’ as in ‘三’ by the way. You might be able to get the answer from the kanji, but 三 means three. This was released on the PS3.

I don’t trust Miyuki-chan. But, then again, maybe it’s a red herring. I’m expecting her to sneak up behind Akagawa-san with a baseball bat or something. Oh, sorry, Arakawa. Btw,

I’ll give my thoughts and feelings on the ending of Yoigoshi (manga). I am taking the optimistic route that both Mion and Shion survived the Great Hinamizawa Disaster, and that Shion’s story was 100% true. However, it could also be that Mion was an apparition of some sort. Maybe Hinamizawa Syndrome was the cause of it. Maybe Shion was just cosplaying as Mion for some reason. There are many possibilities. I know everyone has a favourite so…

You probably want to know my favourite Sonozaki twin. Well, I don’t know. I’m a naturally contrarian person. I tend to like characters most people ignore, and Mion doesn’t rank high on a lot of people's tier lists. However, I truly think I like Shion better. I know it’s the popular opinion and that the Mion stans might think I’m just uncultured, but Shion is a character whose arc resonated with me. I love Mion. The only character out of the main girls I don’t really connect with is Rena. I used to, back when all I saw was the anime because I was younger and saw her as the “happy snappy” girl. As a kid who probably had a personality disorder, and still probably does, I don’t know I think I’m cluster B but maybe I’m not, I resonated with that. But ever since reading the VN this year, well last year depending on how you view it, I don’t relate to Rena at all beyond that. Rena isn’t a bad character, I just don’t relate to her much. I’m not sure what my exact tier list would be, but Rena would still be in ‘best blorbo’ tier. I think Shion and Satoko are the most relatable of the main cast. I also love Hanyuu despite the fandom not really liking her, because yes, she’s flawed. She can’t let go of Rika. It isn’t until Saikoroshi-hen where Hanyuu lets go of that. But honestly? I love how flawed Hanyuu is. I like how despite not relating to Hanyuu at all, she’s still a blorbo. <LOL YOU AREN’T CLUSTER B I had an ED… well.. have… that makes me a total rage machine. also the caffeine didn’t help. fuck caffeine. shit makes you into a fake shell of a human.>

My current ranking might be 1. Shion/Satoko. 2. Rika. 3. Mion 4. Hanyuu. 5. Rena. I’m not sure though. I love them all equally. I was actually gonna write an essay: “How Satoko Hojo’s Story Impacted Me: A Shallow Literary Analysis” but I feel like character analysis isn’t for me. Plus, it got very personal. <if I’m caught doing literary analysis I’m being kidnapped btw> <anyway updated based tier list: 1. Shion 2. Satoko 3. Rena 4. Rika 5. Mion. Actually hard to decide between Satoko and Rena. Doesn’t matter all that matters is that Shion is the best. Funny cuz I think Rika was my favourite character when I first watched the anime in 2018.>

Is Arakawa suffering from HS? I doubt it. Because that would be too obvious. Not only that, but you only start hearing the footsteps at L4-L5 I believe? And if he was that far gone, wouldn’t he be more obvious about that, or is this an unreliable narrator thing? We need to focus on the facts. Miyuki is a police officer or something? Or she writes for a newspaper? She is Akasaka’s daughter. Though Arakawa looks a lot like Akasaka, that’s irrelevant. The two of them found bodies in a car. In Yoigoshi manga, the culprit was… that blonde dude that looked like Satoshi. So, yeah. Mystery solved lol. <lemon pretends to be smart #2. Also theory: Arakawa is Akasaka in disguise… GAME THEORRY… wait I just realized this post was before matpat retired. tbh I never watched game theory after that. I wonder if they fell off. SH-SH-ION!!! Yayyyyyy, I missed you. Okay, I know picking a fave out of two ostracised children whose entire conflict in Meakashi stemmed from their love being divided between “Mion” entirely and none to “Shion” is sad and ironic, but I loveeee Shion. I root for the underdog. I know Mion is a compelling character, and I love her, but there’s something so cathartic about Shion taking back her identity as Mion in Meakashi-hen.

“Matsuri.” They said the thing.

I’m wondering… if Satoko never pushed her parents, would the events of Higurashi never transpired? Maybe… <why am I blaming this child lmao it doesn’t even make sense why did h think this>

This is something I do not want to discuss. However, a lot of people say “throat scratching is campy” in reference to this series. But it isn’t. During breakdowns I’ve had, I almost scratched my throat open. Not just that. I scratch my throat when I’m nervous, too, or ocd takes over. So it’s actually a normal thing. Well for mentally ill people. It’s funny, because I’m actually diagnosed with zero mental illnesses. My mom says I have diagnoses for ocd, anxiety and depression, but I’ve never seen them, so I don’t believe. That doesn’t mean I don’t believe have them. OCD? Yes. 100%. Anxiety? Most people say “I guess there’s nothing we can do.” But ‘shouganai’ means that in Japanese, and the closest translation is that. See, I was reading, but feeling depressive (…at least I’m able to recognise depression as a separate state and not the default mode I should be in anymore) so I wasn’t really engaging with the story and didn’t care about the Riku ending with Hanyuu (btw, would y’all type Hanyuu in this arc as sp1?) but when Rika showed up at the end, I was realising a lot of my inner depression was fuelled by loneliness and that most people have a support group to fall back on. And then I saw her. Then I found out it was Ouka and it made the following funnier, but more symbolic. There’s always a chance for new people. I need to stop clinging to the past.) And I was reminiscing on when I discovered Higurashi. Well, I knew about it when I was barely in the two digits and got into it around end of primary/beginning of high school and… they were my friends. I don’t care how corny it is. I loved this series. I loved the characters. My fictional characters I’ve had in my head throughout the years are also my ‘friends,’ in a way. To connect is to befriend. And I connected with them. I connect with Mion a lot right now, as after 6 years mostly of ID’ing as non-binary I realised I’m just a cis girl who didn’t feel worthy of being called a girl, because of my less feminine attributes, my body, my appearance. It actually made me more trans supportive. Before, I was insecure about ‘validity’ and overthinking the bioessentialist viewpoints transphobes throw around- ‘what if they’re right?’ But, not only do I disagree (not gonna get into a debate about it here, I don’t argue online in general and I don’t have the energy rn) with that viewpoint but now that I felt that overwhelming despair of ‘why did no one ever treat me like a girl?’ I… I understand how horrible it is to be treated like a gender you’re not. Wow. 10/10. I’d honestly recommend this as a way to get someone into Higurashi. Just tell them to not read past the stuff with Tomitake, because the parts with Rika and Mion near the end are VERY spoiler-heavy in the sense that I can imagine someone reading this and easily peacing what elements remained in the full story, but I can see ones that didn’t. So, Shion came from the twist near the end, and Mion becoming the only one who doesn’t get infected is a play on what happened here, and- my only wonder is who the blue one was. Did she develop into Chie?

Well, my insight for the past few arcs has been “fuck thisssss,” so… not very positive. I guess it’s an inevitable fatigue when you read through so many arcs of a story. I just wonder… how much time could’ve been saved for us all, if Ryukishi had hired an editor 23 years ago… and this didn’t become a staple of the franchise.

Like, okay, I understand some visual novels can be long. Even Danganronpa- I’ve clocked in many hours, dozens in most games. Except V3, because it’s buggy as hell, but I still watched playthroughs of them all back in 2019, so. But the difference, as poor as I think of Danganronpa’s story (and god, I’d love to go over why, but I’m not good at structuring essays and shit. Anyway, everyone has critiqued Danganronpa at this point. I do feel I’d have things to say. Unique things? No. But nothing is unique in this world… a sad truth.)

At least Danganronpa keeps you very engaged, sometimes in less than stellar ways. (For the record, I’m not critiquing this arc, nor am I saying every arc has to have subway surfers gameplay) Higurashi has a lot of filler. I feel like if Ryukishi07 really wanted that filler, it could’ve been relegated to bonus content. For example, club activities in Onikakushi & Watanagashi were notoriously long filler-wise. Move them to bonus content. I understand its purpose is set-up, but it’s a wee excessive.

This arc doesn’t have a filler problem. In fact, I’ve been engaged. I can acknowledge fight scenes aren’t my favourite, but that more comes down to personal preference. I do think some previous bonus arcs have been a bit… eh… I mean, it’s different writers, so I don’t really know if it’s a me problem? I guess, I just- yeah, it’s a me problem. I’ll take the L here.

Makes sense; use symbolism your core audience would be less(?) familiar with. Cosmos flowers represent harmony and balance, and self-reliance. Could that be related to Rena? The last part, I mean. I doubt it, but maybe. Considering Nagisa didn’t put the flower there, it does lead more credence. I’m not sayin’ Rena literally put it there, but I can think like a writer considering I am one, and that sort of detail isn’t random.

The amount of filler words and lack of immersive storytelling is absurd. “She felt, she saw, she noticed” “I was depressed.” It’s not that the writer here doesn’t know how to describe emotions; it’s that it’s randomly decent and then sometimes just this shit. Okay I teared up while skimming the Hanyuu end scene in Omote but that was because I was thinking about something collapse related and getting depressed as hell and the sad music DOES NOT HELP.

Ok the ending of Miotsukushi Ura, despite my feelings, was still kinda metal asf, thanks to the music.
