Finally reading #onliberty by #johnstuartmill, over ten years after being recommended it by my university tutor. When reading old(er) philosophical works or just about previous societies in general I often wonder what those living then would think of our current epoch. I don't particularly mean technology in this instance (well I am thinking of that now 🤔) but both micro and macro trends in society. Would Mill be horrified by Brexit, Trump, Bolsonaro etc? Equally, would he be horrified by the current state of the European Union? What would he think of the Culture Wars? And can somebody at Labour HQ *PLEASE* get Keith Starmer to read the chapter that talks about the necessity of having true, actual opposition to rote thought? I need to read more of his work and its context before I can answer that. Privacy Is Part of the Product, Not an Afterthought

I picked an apt time to read this one. It was written in the 1800s, but still has relevance today. This was especially true of his Subjection of Women, which beautifully reasons why women should be equally allowed to participate in government. Beautiful.
