In addition to talking to the classroom teacher, it can be helpful to talk to your child’s tutor. Online tutors can regularly assess your child for educational growth or help determine your child’s particular weaknesses. Your child’s tutor may be able to suggest ways for you to reinforce tutoring, particularly if your child struggles with a certain subject or area
From Digital Reader:
Unlike the education plans proposed by some of Quinn’s competition for the Democratic Party nomination, the funding for all these changes would not come from new taxes or diverted revenue but from existing funds spent by the NYC Dept of Education. For example, the tablets could be funded by diverting current textbook funds and either replacing expensive textbooks with free and readily available OER-licensed textbooks.
Update: An early comment reminded me that I should have pointed out that school districts can write their own textbooks and save hundreds of thousands of dollars. It’s also possible for a single teacher to customize a textbook for their class or even for a school district to forgo textbooks entirely (here). And then there are the digital textbook repositories that a number of states have started (California, for one).
“We currently spend more than a hundred million dollars a year on textbooks,” said Quinn. “That’s enough money to buy tablets for every student in New York City public schools, and cover staff costs to make sure these online texts are meeting rigorous standards”.
From the Hechinger Report:
Advocates of the measure say colleges should not be held responsible for the failings of high schools and that the increased accountability could prompt K-12 systems to improve. Students in Mississippiconsistently perform near the bottom on standardized tests; in 2011, students in 44 other states outperformed Mississippi’s fourth-graders on the National Assessment of Educational Progress. And only 62 percent of students graduate from high school within four years and with a regular degree. But several higher education experts say they are skeptical about penalizing high schools — particularly those in high-poverty areas — for factors that are at least partially outside of their control.
“You need to somehow take into account the difficulties that high schools have,” said Thomas Bailey, director of the Community College Research Center at Teachers College, Columbia University. He added that it’s a “very simplistic notion” to put all the blame for remediation on the secondary school system.
From Steve Hargadon:
Join me Tuesday, January 29th, for a live and interactive FutureofEducation.com conversation with Gary Obermeyer about the work and philosophy of W. Edwards Deming (see theWikipedia article on Deming for a good overview). Deming, who is widely credited with helping to dramatically alter the economy of Japan in the 1950's, argued articulately and with data against the "tyranny of the prevailing style of management" in business, government, and education. His system theory debunked numerical goals, performance-based pay, and the shallow and short-term thinking of "managing by results.
"Diploma mills use tricky wording to disguise the fact they can’t actually award a GED. Watch out for sites that suggest you can take an online GED test to earn a high school degree. A high school degree cannot be earned with a single test."
