New online safety rules come into force from today, which will require video-sharing platforms to have effective age verification systems in
I have yet to actually encounter any age verification requests (if anyone in Ireland has please lmk how it’s operating) but the fact that it’s so vague about the actual process of age verification just screams data exploitation and breaches waiting to happen.
(While the code does state children’s age verification data can’t be processed commercially, it does not say anything about adults.)
Without a doubt going to be inaccurate, discriminatory, and involve releasing completely unnecessary information to third parties. (what do they mean ‘cognitive skills test’??)
And that’s not even starting on the potential for censorship.
