Air India was founded on 15th October 1932 by J.R.D Tata as Tata Airlines. It is now owned by Air India Limited, a Government of India enterprise, and operates a fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft serving 90 domestic and international destinations. It is the third largest domestic airline in India. Air India Limited is headquartered at the Indian Airlines House, New Delhi. The company has 35 international and 66 domestic destinations covering 4 continents. It also offers ground handling services, including ramp, passenger and baggage, and cargo handling under the Air India Airport Services brand.
Air India Express started its operation on 29 April 2005. It is known to be the low-cost carrier. It is headquartered in Kochi. On 29 April 2005 it launched 3 flights simultaneously from Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode. The airline was launched as a low-cost carrier with the objective of providing convenient connectivity, to short-haul international routes, in the Middle East and Southeast Asia for the Indian expatriate community. There fleet consists of state of the art 23 B737-800 aircraft. Aircrafts have single class economy. The capacity of these aircraft is around 180 seats.
IndiGo was founded on 2006 by Rahul Bhatia of InterGlobe Enterprises and Rakesh Gangwal. In July 2006, IndiGo received its first Airbus A320-200 aircraft and commenced operations on August 4, 2006, with a service from New Delhi to Imphal via Guwahati. It has a market share of 41.2% as of May, 2017. IndiGo is not only the most efficient low fare operator domestically but is also comparable with global low cost airlines. IndiGo currently operate flights connecting to 46 destinations – 39 domestic and 7 international.
Jet Airways is an Indian Airline, founded on 1 April 1992. It started its operations on 5 May 1993. It is based on Mumbai. Jet Airways is one of the largest airlines in India with hubs at Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai and Brussels airports. The carrier operates an extensive domestic and regional network within the subcontinent as well as services to Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and North America. Jet Airways serves 65 destinations including 45 domestic and 20 international destinations in 15 countries across Asia, Europe and North America.
SpiceJet was earlier known as Royal Airways, it was founded on 23 May 2005. It is headquartered in Gurugram, India. The airline was launched with an objective to deliver the lowest air fares with the highest consumer value, to price sensitive consumers. Currently, the company enjoys a market share of over 8%. With 125 flights to 19 destinations daily and over 50,000 people flying in a month, SpiceJet follows the Low Cost Carrier (LCC) business model on the lines of the most successful LCCs globally and provides the lowest cost per unit amongst Indian LCCs.
AirAsia India was founded on 28 March 2013 and started its operations on 12 June 2014. It is headquartered in Chennai, India. The other main hub is in Bangalore. It is a low cost carrier. AirAsia is the first foreign airline to set up a subsidiary in India and the company marked Tata’s return to the aviation industry after 60 years. AirAsia India is the fourth largest low cost carrier in India, after IndiGo, SpiceJet and GoAir with a market share of 3.3%.
Vistara, a full-service airline, is a joint venture between Tata Sons Ltd. and Singapore Airlines. It started its operation on 9 January 2015. It is based in Gurgaon with its hub at Delhi-Indira Gandhi International Airport. Vistara looks to woo passengers with 20% more legroom in its economy class. Also, the seat in an Vistara aircraft reclines more than its competition. Vistara today becomes the third full-service airline in India after Jet Airways and Air India.
GoAir is a low-cost carrier Indian Airlines. It started its operation on November 2005. It is owned by Wadia Group. In May 2017 it was the fifth largest airline in India with an 8.5% passenger market share. It is headquartered in Mumbai, India. The other main hubs are Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, and Kolkata. GoAir operates to 22 destinations in India, with over 140 daily flights and 975 weekly flights.
