Thyla - Only Ever

Only Ever is taken from Brighton quartet Thyla’s debut EP, What’s On Your Mind, which will be released on the 1st February 2019, via REX Records. We first posted them in 2014!!

Thyla are a four piece dream pop / indie rock band from Brighton, England, UK. They are comprised of Millie, Mitch, Dan and Danny.

Last Friday, Brighton rockers Thyla released their long awaited debut EP, ‘What’s On Your Mind?’. And really, we’re not kidding when we say long awaited. The quartet enamored us for the first time over three years ago with early songs that seem to have disappeared from Soundcloud since. And then, late last year, they reignited our love with Blue, an adrenaline-fueled post-punk and indie rock anthem with ethereal gusting vocals and howling riffs that felt very Wolf Alice meets The Joy Formidable. We’re incredibly excited to see how much the buzz has grown on Thyla since, and I’m sure it’ll only increase now that ‘What’s On Your Mind?’ has arrived, approximately a month before Thyla hits the stage in Austin for SXSW. Only Ever is the expansive sprawling, widescreen blustering opening track from ‘What’s On Your Mind?’, and what a magnificent song it is to behold with its guitar squalls and svelte gliding vocals. Millie Duthie of Thyla stated: “All of the songs on our debut, in some way, talk about the ills of today’s ‘social network’. The lyrics are based on negative personal experiences and a subsequent thirst to understand what it is that has made us so miserable. There’s pressure everywhere online to project your thoughts and feelings about pretty much everything. It’s self-fulfilling, the more you give away the more you feel compelled to give away. The ‘social network’ feeds off of individuals’ social anxiety by introducing a point scoring system of likes and shares that creates a competitive market for the mundane; a virtual playing field for status. It’s made the private public and we’re all obsessed.” Thyla’s debut EP is out via REX Records. Stream it in full and take in all its glory, here.  Y/N stirred her water with the straw. Her date stood her up. Oh well, looks like she’ll be eating alone again.

“Hey,” someone greeted. Y/N glanced up shocked.

“Loki? I didn’t know you came here,” Y/N stared at him. His eyes are emerald I didn’t know that, they look amazing with his long raven hair, wow, she thought, What? No! Bad, he’s your friend he doesn’t see you that way.

“L&L Automat is the best diner in New York, of course, I come here.”

His smile is gorgeous.

“Touché.” Y/N gave him a shy smile.

“You got stood up again?”

“Is it that obvious?” Y/N asked, wincing.

“Yeah, this is the –what is it- sixth time you’ve been here alone dressed up,” Loki commented.

“All I’ve ever wanted was to be someone’s first choice.” Y/N sighed, mumbling under breath, “I guess I’m just not meant to be.”

“You’ve always been mine.”

Y/N sat ram-rod straight, her Bambi (Y/E/C) eyes wide, “Really?”

“Yes,” Loki admitted, uncomfortable. Y/N fought back tears.

“You think of me in a romantic way?” Her breathing was unsteady.

“Yes.” She put her hand on her mouth to muffle herself. Loki heard her whimper. “You’re crying. Are you alright?”

“Better than alright-“ Y/N was interrupted by Angie.

“Here’s some pie.” Angie set two slices of pie on the table, glancing up, “Am I interrupting something?”

“No.” Loki making his getaway.

“Yes,” Y/N corrected, grabbing onto Loki’s wrist,” I was the middle of telling Loki that I thought I’d never be someone’s first choice and how happy it made me to know that I have always been his choice and that I’m kind of, sorta in love with him.”

Angie smiled,” Well, I’ll let you two finish your talk alone with your pecan pie.”

“Do you really mean that, Y/N?” Loki looked unsure and slightly embarrassed going by the color in his cheeks.

Intertwining their fingers, “Yes, I really do. I understand if you don’t feel the same way, but I want you to know how I feel and I want to be still your best friend. Because being your friend is way more important to me than dating anybody.”

“I share this sentiment. I would also like to try going on a date with you, be able to cuddle with you, and watch movies, and just spend time with you, sex being completely optional.”

“I’d like that, too. The sex part, too,” Y/N glanced at the table, an idea coming to her, “Well, there two perfectly good pieces of pie, I’d hate to let go to waste.”

“Uh, yes, perfect.”

“EEEHHHHHHH!!!!!!”

Y/N and Loki saw the source of the scream was Janet and beside Janet was Angie and Amora who were both smirking.

“It took you guys long enough to figure it out!” Angie exclaimed.

“THIS SHIP HAS SAILED!!!!” Janet now was hopping up and down, with her arms flapping. They were lucky that Loki and Y/N were the last customers.

“Indeed it has, Miss Van Dyne. Now, if you would ever kind to leave us to finish our pie, thank you very much,” Loki said smoothly.

“Please, Jan,” Y/N added.

“Oh alright, you two deserve it.” Janet left dragging Enchantress and Angie behind her, giggling with Angie.

“Well, I think everyone is going to know about us by tomorrow,” Y/N commented, sliding back into her seat.

“Most definitely,” Loki agreed, taking the seat across from her.

“So what is your favorite food?” Y/N asked, placing her left hand on his, using the other to fork pie into her mouth.

Their conversation continued late into the night until the owners chased them out. Separating outside their dorms.
