Don’t expect any Skam related content from me. But also...hot take.
Skam France and WTFock have a similar pitfall of making mountains out of mole hills, but they are distinctly different in the ways they do this.
Skam France makes things bigger, more intense and dramatic. That take things from the original, and just make it a whole thing. Example, making Nora/Yousef into a whole ass relationship not just a kiss.
WTFock takes things (at least) one step too far and crosses the line. They take stuff from the original and just dial it up until it’s over kill, unnecessary, insensitive or all of the above. Example, having the woman across from Sana not just give her a dirty look, but move seats AND THEN having that random guy call her a sl*t for wearing make up.
And because of this, Skam France will usually rank higher than WTFock for me because there is some subjectivity to their soap opera, ridiculous nature of storytelling. I don’t like it, but some people do and I respect that. France leaves me rolling my eyes, where is WTFock leaves me sick to my stomach when they do their shitty stuff. So WTFock falls to the bottom because of my rankings because by stepping over the line, they often step into traumatic and objectively offensive territory.
It’s not that Skam France is never traumatizing/offensive or that WTFock never feels unnecessarily intense in a low impact way. But the shows have tendencies.
Also, when I say this, I’m really only talking about the “OG” seasons (and Kato because I suffered through watching that one for some reason lol.)
I’ve been thinking about this a lot with Yasmina season airing and now France is coming back. I feel a little reinvigorated with my passion for skam, to be honest. But it’s very different than where I was with Druck this time a year ago. This feels much more at the core of why I love the Skamverse, what I always come back to when you boil things down— I love this universe from a storytelling and media perspective. Taking the same story and watching it be told 8 times in 8 different ways really makes you think about storytelling and all the things that go into it. So dissecting what makes one remake the way it is and another a different way really sparks something in me. It’s such an education in story telling. Like you could teach a writing class using the skam verse.
I don’t know why I’m sharing this because I’m NOT in the fandom anymore. my mental health cannot take that anymore. Like, I hope no one takes offense to this because it’s 97% not personal, but I’m so much happier not existing in fandom spaces. But there is something validating to put my thoughts into the void and I’m trying to be more earnest and open. You know, not get so worried everything time I post something on social media. So here, take this post. And like the tags say, please don’t reblog and only mutuals (you know who you are) can interact. And I’m really not looking to have a convo about my hot take lol, but if you have thoughts about the other stuff here or just wanna say hi, go for it mutuals, lol.
