Under the licensing act of 1872 it is illegal in Scotland to be in charge of a cow when you are drunk - fact 😂#onlyinscotland 🏴 https://www.instagram.com/p/ClkMun0I-7G/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
"Were awe Jock Thamsons bairns".... I know the phrase and I knew Jock Thomson was a real person... What I didn't know was that he was originally from Dailly 😁 #visitsouthwestscotland #onlyinscotland #southwestcoastal300 #southayrshire #ayrshire #gsabiosphere #gsabiospherecommunity https://www.instagram.com/p/CRGpyK-HSU7/?utm_medium=tumblr
Tantallon Castle. If your idea of an ideal castle is one with sheer cliffs and unparalleled views of the sea, then you are in luck. Tantallon Castle is about an hour's drive from Edinburgh. Strategically located high on a cliff outside the town of North Berwick, it overlooks Scotland's east coastline. It was originally built somewhere in the 1930s by William, 1st Earl of Douglas, and would, for much of its use, remain in the hands of his descendants. However, like many historic castles across Scotland, it would be attacked and besieged many times. It finally faced its final defeat when Oliver Cromwell invaded Scotland in the early 1650s. He laid siege to Tantallon Castle with thousands of his troops. Of course, the inevitable was bound to happen. And it did, exactly 12 days later, when the tiny force of Scots sheltered inside surrendered. The damage to the castle was so severe that it would never be occupied again. Nevertheless, despite being in a state of ruin, the castle has remained a tourist attraction over the centuries, drawing in famous visitors including Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson, and even Queen Victoria. Of course, if you do not want to spend your life and time in ruins, then there is always the promise of playing some golf at the clubs located nearby. Just make sure to lug around your clubs. With views like this, it is the perfect spot to tee off. _________________________________________ @nofixedaddrs #nofixedaddrs _________________________________________ Visit Scotland 🏴 #VisitScotland #OnlyInScotland #historicscotland #eastlothian #ForeverEdinburgh #edinphoto _________________________________________ #northberwickgolfclub #tantallongolfclub _________________________________________ ………. ……... …….. ……. …… ….. …. … .. . #tantalloncastle #seacliffbeach #northberwick #scottishcastles #ScottishHistory #hiddenscotland #unlimitedscotland #scottishcollective #igscotland #simplyscotland #igersscots #castlesofscotland #instascotland #ig_scot #icu_scotland #scotland_greatshots #historicscotland #scotland_insta #scotland_ig (at Tantallon Castle) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRBKViWsq3y/?utm_medium=tumblr
It appears to be a bumper year for Hawthorn Bloom this year and like everything in Scotland there's all sorts of myth and legends surrounding this particular tree... Known as The Queen of The May, Fairy Bush and a few other names it symbolised re birth in the spring and death in the winter.. I suppose before the discovery of antibiotics a good few jags from the huge thorns it produces would be enough for infection to set in and pack you off to which ever netherworld you believed in. It was also believed to be the home of the fairies.. Not the Tinkerbell type but the kind that lured children away cursed families and destroyed livestock and crops. Brides would wear a garland of Hawthorn to symbolise love and protection and in more modern times "Many haws means mair snaws" seems to be a favorite. Hope that one's wrong 😬 #visitsouthwestscotland #southwestcoastal300 #onlyinscotland #mustseeayrshire #ayrshire #gsabiosphere #gsabiospherecommunity #southayrshire #legends #myths #scotland https://www.instagram.com/p/CP-kmM5n-aT/?utm_medium=tumblr
"Ye Banks and Braes" and all that. The River Doon has to be one of the most famous rivers in Scotland after being immortalised in the poem by Robert Burns. The Drumgrange and Kiers section runs from Dalmellington to Patna through, what was once, the industrial heart of The Doon Valley. Near the village of Waterside you can find still see the delapidated buildings and chimneys which were part of the ironworks and coal washer that used to stand on the site...... #visitsouthwestscotland #onlyinscotland #doonvalley #gsabiosphere #eastayrshire #mustseeayrshire #southwestcoastal300 #river #rivers #ayrshire #riverdoon https://www.instagram.com/p/CP3iTBmJxF-/?utm_medium=tumblr
No much happens in Dalrymple these days, but at one point it was at the forefront of aeronautical engineering 🤷♂️ Mora Weir... Mora Weir lived at Skeldon House, wife of James Weir, who was the brother of the first Viscount Weir. Mora was the first woman in Britain to obtain a flying certificate and along with a Spaniard named Juan De La Cierva, made numerous experiments with an Autogyro (fore runner to the helicopter). Mora Weir used Barbieston Holm as her airfield where she built a large hanger to store the aircraft. The first Helicopter flight in Britain took place at Dalrymple on the 7th June 1938 in a Wier W-5. #visitsouthwestscotland #onlyinscotland #doonvalley #gsabiosphere #eastayrshire #mustseeayrshire #southwestcoastal300 #biospherecommunity #aviation #helicopter #autogyro #engineering https://www.instagram.com/p/CPgeyERn5dG/?utm_medium=tumblr
"What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare."....... Sometimes in my haste to find out of the way, interesting nooks and crannies around The Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Unesco Biosphere I forget what I've got in my own wee part of it. The River Doon, literally, at the bottom of the garden. It's looking gorgeous at the moment 😊 #visitsouthwestscotland #onlyinscotland #doonvalley #gsabiosphere #gsabiospherecommunity #eastayrshire #riverdoonwalks #southwestcoastal300 #river #rivers #ayrshire https://www.instagram.com/p/CPdhMynHNEb/?utm_medium=tumblr
