day #38, trekking day #8
Or the day I went on the top of the world.
After spending one night in Lobuche, at 4900 meters above sea level, this morning early we left to reach Gorak Shep, at 5100 meters. It shouldn’t be that difficult, it’s only 200 meters… That’s what we thought before leaving… The way was wonderful, the desert steppe around us, only mountain, sky and clouds at the horizon. But I really started to feel the altitude… My head was turning at every step, and I needed to go on as slowest as possible if I didn't want to fell. I decided not to take any medicine but an Aspirine since it’s the last day. It was so difficult, so difficult for me, and for the others too. We could almost see our goal nearer and nearer, but in mind it was only further and further…
After just 2 hours of incredible fatigue, we finally reached Gorak Shep. It’s a very small village built on a frozen sand lake, no need to tell how beautiful it was. Unfortunately the fatigue and the headache didn't allow me to enjoy it at most… After maybe one hour of break, without our backpacks, we start walking again on the rocks to reach Mount Everest Base Camp. I really can’t believe I did it till there, I was so close to my objective and I felt I went beyond all my limits and pushed myself to the top, of the world :)
It was just a little - but incredibly hard - promenade to the Base Camp. We walked on the peak of a mountain surrounding the beautiful glacier. We were really there, after 8 days of walking through valleys and villages, we were there, WE MADE IT!
At the Base Camp, we found our path blocked, we couldn’t go through the tents as we were imagining, but it was fine, we reached quote 5300 meters, and this deserved a celebration. After some pictures, we had our dreamed aperò on the top of the world, tasting a really good Italian sausage we brought especially for the occasion! This was definitely one of the most exciting experience I have ever been through, and I will definitely never forget it!
I feel like I really need to thank my companions who supported and boosted me up in the difficult moments. It was an amazing adventure, a great challenge! I can definitely say I am proud of myself, I really didn’t think I could do it, but I did.
From Paris, to Kathmandu, to the Top of the World. One of my dreams came true today. I feel like from now on, nothing is impossible.
