When he says “do you have any idea how much people would pay, who they would kill just to be in your shoes?” that is the voice of experience. Also the voice of someone who still has enough of a conscience to being tormented by his decisions and consider the “killing/sacrificing people” part of his vocation to be a terrible price to pay.

I think a small part of the reason he feels he NEEDS to become a vampire now is that he preemptively started living in accordance with vampire standards of morality rather than human ones, and now he needs to complete the transformation so he can feel like he is actually above human ethical qualms so that his own will finally stop hurting so much. 

I feel like learning that his victims live again through reincarnation has probably been a comfort to Guillermo as well (if anyone has bothered to tell him yet)

i didn’t truly connect the dots (yes i’m dumb) until you said it! i was wondering about the ‘’who they would kill’’ line for a while now. it bothered me because guillermo doesn’t... actually do the killing, but well, he enables it. and even for the vampires’ recreational purposes (the orgy, for example) rather than just ‘’well, vampires have to feed’’ motives. also in the first episode he kinda tries to remove the blame by saying ‘’i am not a killer, i just find people who are easy... to kill’’. i guess he’s still trying to disconnect his feelings about other humans in favor of his dream.

hell, your analysis are always so good! i guess i really don’t have anything to add apart from that and good job, as always <3

Tbh, I find their approaches very different. Neither are what I would call ideal, but Gaiman is a lot more forthright about his original intent, & the relative uselessness of statements made outside of the text, and more careful to leave breathing room for ppl to interpret the book/series as they please. My main complaint with him is he sometimes says things that make it seem like he doesn’t understand that being non-binary doesn’t automatically preclude being gay.

Has Flint ever actually killed anyone impulsively without any motive but a desire for revenge? I feel like the closest he gets in the series is Alfred Hamilton and Peter Ashe. When I was questioning the plausibility of Flint reigning in his anger at Silver in 210 if he really does suspect Silver’s involvement, I was reminded of how Flint reacted when Mr Scott agreed to help the Andromache escape Nassau without unloading its guns.

I have no memory of Flint reacting to that—all I remember is the conversation with Eleanor and Mr. Scott, where she mentions that the Walrus men don’t know he’s the reason they had to chase the ship in the first place. You’ll have to remind me of the scene between Flint and Mr. Scott. 

Killing Vincent and Nicholas wouldn’t be impulsive or without motive—they were thieves and traitors, and according to the laws of the ship, they would have been executed. Also, killing Alfred Hamilton and Peter Ashe absolutely counts as killing purely out of a desire for revenge, or whatever other complicated emotions get tied up in revenge (that is to say, without some practical motive).

More importantly, and something I should’ve mentioned in the first post, how would Silver’s move in 303 make any sense at all if Flint already knew he’d betrayed them? Silver is bragging about how he managed to pull the wool over Flint’s eyes, how he was unafraid of him, etc., and how all of this means Flint must “account” for him. Why would Silver telling Flint the truth, if Flint already knows the truth, have such a radical impact on their relationship? Am I supposed to think that Silver owning up to something Flint already knew demonstrated some sort of gumption that Flint can’t help but admire? That doesn’t sound like super solid writing to me.

Stop ✋ fetishizing ✋️ chubby ✋️Yuuri ✋️!!!

This. On the one hand, I think Yuuri’s sense of his body as one that gains weight easily (and his experiences from childhood to the main canon era of being derided–teasingly and not so much– for that) has to inform certain aspects of his self-image. And handled with actual empathy for his feelings, I think that this is an interesting and (painfully) relatable aspect of his character to explore. But. periods of losing control of his weight rly seem 2 be associated w poor mental health 4 him.

I’m certain that’s true, but at the same time, it’s made clear that Yuuri’s poor mental health at the beginning of the series is not THE RESULT of him gaining weight, but in fact resulted in him gaining weight. 

Of course Yuuri shouldn’t, if he were to gain weight at some point in the future, just naturally because, IDK he’d retired and maybe was working out a little less (though the idea that a happy Yuuri would ever not work out/skate a lot in his free time when this is clearly such a calming thing for him is so when I see fics where Yuuri doesn’t exercise a lot I’m just????), be upset about it. 

So yeah I mean, a fanwork where he’s a little bit heavier post retirement because he’s eating a little freer or whatever and has a little bit of tummy on him, is fine (and of course he isn’t going to be skating as much as he would be when he was competitive). He should be able to be content with himself like that and think himself attractive/sexy. 

But some people in fandom’s tendency to act like that is WHO HE IS (and if you don’t write him chubby when not competing ur wrong) and... frankly often be creepily fetishistic about it (literally saw a post bemoaning that the Yuuri dakimakura wasn’t chubby Yuuri the other day and almost melted into the ground), is not okay. 

And then there’s this kind of--- idea in fandom that chubbiness is Yuuri’s natural state, but it’s weird to me, because Yuuri’s been a skater almost all his life, and so he’s probably spent about 90% of the time in the shape he’s in NOW as opposed to the shape he’s in at the beginning of episode one. I came across a fic the other day about Yuuri being ‘uncomfortable being thin’ because he wasn’t used to that, and I was like ????. The guy has... been... maintaining a trim figure for likely the past twelve years of his life? He’s been a dedicated athlete for that long? He’s been in the senior division for five years, a junior for who knows how long before that, a novice before that, etc. etc. 

Another friend of mine was talking about fandom’s tendency to sort of infantalize chubby Yuuri too?? I’ve seen it too. 

Last but not least episode one Yuuri was... realistically 10-15 lbs maybe over his current weight? It’s not that much. o.O;;
