Do you have any Maori John updates for the greedy masses?

I’m still plugging away at Maori John - Academics are being a bitch rn and my depression decided to be a bitch so it’s put something of a stop on me writing, but I’m doing better now and writing again and I do have a little bit more!

“I know what you are.” says De Groot, as soon as Hōne is allowed to mingle with the men once again. “I know what you are, John Silver.”He’s pointing at Hōne with a shaking hand, and Hōne puts on his most charming and disarming smile.“If you’re about to say ‘thief’, you’re a little late to come into possession of that truth.” says Hōne, earning some chuckles from the men, but fewer than he might have hoped. 

“You’re one of them.” says De Groot, and a chill goes down Hōne’s spine at both his tone and the number of eyes now on the two of them. “One of who, Mister De Groot?”There are only so many ways that this can go. Hōne could end up over the side or hanging from the yardarm or so many other painful things that end in his death, all because someone saw and recognised the very thing he took pains to keep concealed. “One of those painted warriors from the land to the south - far to the south.” says De Groot. “I was never raised to be a warrior.” says Hōne, never denying the statement. “No wonder you could survive such a wound.” De Groot continues, as though Hōne had said nothing at all. “People like yours - they’re so strong.”Hōne finds himself at a loss for words. He was so sure that the discovery would result in his expulsion from the crew, in his death, in pain, in loss, in -“What is your name?” asks De Groot.“You know my name.” says Hōne. “There is no way your name is John.” says De Groot. Hōne wonders, for a moment, what it would be like to hear them say his name. He wonders what it would feel like. No one has spoken his name in years. “Hōne.” he says, at last. “My name is Hōne Karahiwa.”It is only partly true, as much truth as he feels he can give. But he thinks they deserve it, these men who he had become willing to die for, these men who were brothers to him. “Hōne.” says Muldoon, like he’s tasting the word. “Yes, that sounds better.”It is more of his past than he has told anyone in a very long time. As much as he hates to admit it, he feels lighter for the telling of it. ***Awake and with some limited mobility, Hōne finds himself spending far more time on deck with his brothers from the crew. It’s something new, to be this open and calm about himself, and it takes some time to keep himself from jumping, scared, every time someone calls him Hōne. It’s a welcome distraction from his leg, however, answering questions about his people and his home. He tells Dooley about pounamu and the different shapes it was carved in, while Muldoon listens eagerly from the sidelines. De Groot wants to know more about haka, and in the half light of the torches they keep for night watch, Hōne teaches them how to make the shapes and form the words from their stomachs not their lungs and when they chant it back to him, all of them together a loud force to be reckoned with, and Hōne has to blink his eyes to hide the water in them. Joji wants to hear stories of heroes, and Hōne remembers the stories is mother told him and tells Joji about the days of old when the world was new and how Maui fished the land out of the sea, and by the time he is done, far more men than just Joji are listening. He watches the sun set from the window seat in James’ cabin, watches it dying the waves orange and pink and yellow and purple, and thinks of home and the way the water would change, and he finds himself singing before he really knows what he’s doing. The words trip out of his mouth with ease, something well-loved and well-remembered.

SO FUCKING DIFFERENT wow five years ago I’d only just been diagnosed as autistic and I hadn’t been diagnosed as clinically depressed and I hadn’t suffered through the circle of hell that was my high school in NoVa - God, I hadn’t ever been in the closet shit man. 

Madi – Do you consider yourself to be a political or social activist? Do you want to be?

Bit of both? I march, I sign petitions, I call Senators, I was raised on There Is Power in a Union and good Labor Politics (TM).
