While I'm proud of Ian Thorpe for having the confidence to come out about his sexuality, the fact that this is making headlines all over Australian news clearly shows how unsettled, uncomfortable and unwelcoming Australia and its media are about one of the most basic parts of what makes up a human being. Yes, homosexuality is a hugely discriminated minority across far too much of the world, but here's a wild idea: how about we all stop fixating on what kind of people would rather share the bed with? Sexuality, in a nutshell, is just that. It shouldn't be anyone's business but that of the person themselves. It's bad enough that people who aren't heterosexual often struggle to come to terms with themselves as it is, but the fact that it's waving on a banner for everyone to see the minute they figure themselves out is disgusting. Gay people are people, it's that simple, no need to make a dog and pony show every time they figure themselves out. Until people start to get these basic concepts through their heads, non-heterosexuals are going to continue struggling to come to terms with themselves privately and publicly, possibly for the rest of their lives. End rant.
