Yesterday I had a dream that I absolutely blame you for, as it was related to the pet industry, and based on Nancy, or whatever the name of the old lady in the governor's house was.
In the dream, a young woman was working under a man, who bought a pet. The pet was an underager, a fact the woman knew, but she didn't do anything to help for months, pretending not to see what was happening. Eventually, she found the teen having a flashback about his family, and realized they must be looking for him, and once she saw how scared he was to be left alone with his "owner" she decided to help.
Cue the woman basically kidnapping this teenager and running away from home, embarking on a road trip around the country (presumably the US, but who knows), while trying to help the kid become a person again. They slowly warm up to each other, find the kid's family, and smuggle them out to a country that prohibits the distribution of pets for safety. At one point the kid decides he wants to go public with his story, since they met with other rescues who had been illegally acquired, and they thought they would have a shot at taking down the industry in one go.
I'm not sure if they succeed or not, but they had one last conversation before going to the police, where the woman admits that she's willing to go to jail as an accomplice if it means helping the kid, and the kid is all like "but you helped me", and she just said "I hope someday you recover enough to understand the great disservice I did to you, that I was part of it, that you deserve better than me."
And then I woke up :( But this is clearly your fault!! I was reading your stories before going to bed!!
Holy damn, that’s a story. I’m sitting here reading it going AND THEN WHAT, ANON!?
Sadly, Nancy would never be so self-aware. But I love this dream-story and the found-family of the rescue and the woman who chose to help him while still acknowledging her culpability for how long she waited before she did.
