writing doodle - lost and found
(in response to misstaxidermiss‘s half)
I didn’t even know that this room existed before today. I only know my lineage through the dozens of huge portraits that now lean against the wall, since my parents left me alone in this big house fifteen years ago, when I was seven. I’ve been fortunate - this big place, surely an easy target for the bombs, has escaped unscathed and I’ve found food easily enough by taking little things from the farms that surround me. Not to say that it’s been easy; lord no, most of the people I’ve met have flitted out of my life without a word.
I look around the room, and nothing catches my eye. It looks like every other cluttered storage room I’ve blundered into - rugs, wardrobes, couches, that sort of thing. Though a big framed piece, covered by a drape of red velvet turned gray by decades of dust, catches my eye. I walk over to it, my heart singing at the thought of finding another portrait. Will this one be in oil too?
I throw back the covering and I’m overwhelmed by surprise - it’s not a painting at all. A figure is huddled in the corner, squinting at me. They could almost be human if they didn’t have such silver-colored hands. I’ve read enough of the books in the library to know what this person is - a mirroresque. We’re both silent as we appraise each other.
I break it first.
