OMG WHY ARE YOU SHOWING BRYNN PICTURES OF BLACK DHALIA
Alex and Tobin attend a prestigious private school that is separated into two classes per grade, Class A and Class B. Class A for Hosts. Class B for the Helpers.
Alex feels her heart racing as she gasps trying to suck in every bit of reality that she can. Her chest pinches and she finally lets go of the breath, slowly sitting up with her exhale. She can't see much through the darkness of her room but she doesn't need the lights on to know that she's covered in a layer of sweat.
Hey, are you alright?
The voice from Alex's dream echoes through her body, and with every reverberation a new wave of goosebumps erupts on her skin. She tries to swallow and shut her eyes, but her throat is too dry and her eyes are too scared to see what else lies in the darkness of her conscious--or unconscious.
The brunette looks over at her nightstand to see that it's 2:00AM and rejoices. She makes a quick trip to the restroom to splash some water on her face before she goes back to bed.
--
"You look terrible." says a small freckled girl. Alex watches as she plops down into the seat across from her at the lunch table.
"Mrs. O'Hara, that is no way to address someone on their appearance." Mrs. Scott informs Alex's friend.
"Yes, Kelley." Alex mocks as her smirk grew, "That wasn't necessary." Her eyebrow has risen as she takes the cloth from her lap to dab at the corners of her mouth. Mrs. Scott pats Alex on the back before reminding Kelley that a lady of her class must watch her tongue--in public that is.
"I hate you." Kelley states. "And you do look terrible, Ms. Morgan." Kelley leers, cocking her head to the side as she impales a piece of salmon. Alex opens her mouth to counter but when she sees the look on Kelley's face she can't help but stop and laugh.
"What was that?!" Alex asks, lap cloth covering her mouth as she tries and fails to remain 'lady-like'. She watches her freckled friend fold her silverware on top of her gold rimmed ceramic plate and push it forward, signaling for it to be taken up.
"That? That was undercooked and underseasoned! I get it, we've had budget cuts but I didn't know so did the fish!" Kelley and Alex laugh about it for a little more before Kelley finally gets Alex to open up about why she looked so beaten up.
"Still?" Kelley asks, once Alex clarifies.
"I've been having these--these--I've been hearing these---Kell, I don't know what to call it! All I know is that it's no dream, but it's not a nightmare. It's like a--like a voice, a voice that only asks me if I'm alright." Alex has been waking up a few times a week for almost a few months now and she still doesn't know what to do about it.
"Have you talked to anyone about this, you know, aside from me, Alex?" A concerned look crosses Kelley's eyes and Alex can't help but feel as if she were being pitied.
"It's not that big of a problem Kelley." Alex states, pushing her plate in front of her. "Now lets go." She says as she stands from her seat and heads for the doors that are being held open for her.
--
"Pass! Pass--Yes!" Alex shouts from her spot on the bleachers. She and Kelley watch as the Class B varsity team practice.
"We could definitely use your girl on our team." Kelley says as she watches the midfielder with her shinguards protecting her ankles run up the side of the pitch before chopping in and going straight at goal before perfectly faking out her defender and knocking the ball with the outside of her foot to send it to the forward that was on the run behind her. Kelley looks over at Alex and smirks at the look of pride on her face.
"What'd you say Kel?" Alex asks without breaking her gaze from the indoor pitch.
"If you would listen, you would've heard that I said that we could use Tobin on our team." Kelley laughs, only to regret it seconds later. She feels her stomach drop a little at the sight of Alex's reaction. The smile gracing her lips is gone, the line of her back has now become something of a wilting flower, her shoulders have fallen much like her spirits.
"I know." Alex states. Her gaze, for the first time since they've gotten to the indoor gymnasium, has broken from the pitch and her midfielder.
Kelley inwardly curses at herself.
After a few more moments of silence, she and Alex hear the practice whistles ring through the room signaling the end of today's session.
"C'mon, let's go say hi." Kelley nudges Alex with her elbow. "You know she'd love to see you."
"You know that's not allowed, Kel. She'll get into so much trouble." Alex says, standing and fixing her skirt.
"Hey, it's only against the rules if she approaches you, not if you approach her, remember?" Kelley smiles at the light that shines in Alex smile at the realization. Alex grabs Kelley's wrist and yanks her down the bleachers toward the pitch.
Alex can't help the smile on her lips when she sees Tobin toweling off her face and neck. She's talking to some of her teammates and when her head falls back in laughter Alex feels a pang of jealousy thrust into her gut. Oh, how she wishes she and Tobin had moments like that.
Moments later, Alex's gaze is met but a pair of honey brown eyes. It takes almost a minute for Tobin to realize how's standing feet away from her in school and when it does come to her, her eyes widen and she runs up to Alex.
"Young Miss Alexandra--" Tobin says as she panics and bows in front of her Young Miss. "How may I assist you?"
Alex purses her lips together in attempts to keep her giggles to herself but when Tobin straightens up and flashes her a gentle smirk, she just lets them all out.
"Nothing, I just wanted to see you." Alex shrugged. Tobin's opened her mouth to reply but it quickly twitched into a smile, one Alex could never seem to get out of her mind.
"Oh, well, Young Miss I don't think here is the best place for you to come visit me. We smell a tad gross and you might get hit." Tobin said, obviously flattered by the fact that her Young Miss would seek her out.
"Tobin, I'm in here seventh period! Don't worry about m--"
"Young Miss!" Tobin screams before jumping in front of the incoming ball in Alex's path.
Alex hears a loud thud and suddenly finds herself lying against the turf with Tobin's body hovering over her.
"Tobin!" Alex cries as she sits up, Tobin standing back up. Tobin urgently pulls Alex up and examines her with fear filled eyes before meeting Alex's blue gaze.
"Are you alright?!" Tobin asks, panic dripping from the three words.
Alex feels her hairs stand and her skin erupt in goosebumps.
"What?" She asks in a whisper of slight disbelief and fear.
"Young Miss, are you alright?!" Tobin repeats herself, her panic not settling.
Alex tries to swallows the knot in her throat but once again she finds it dry as sand, so instead she nods. Tobin lets her body fold over as she rests her hands on her knees, breathing in and out, before looking back up into Alex's eyes.
"I am so--I--Please, forgive me for putting you in danger, Young Miss." Tobin pleads, her head hanging back down in shame.
Alex leaves the indoor fields with a worried Tobin watching her.
--
"Where did you two come from?" a familiar voice asks from the further end of the locker room.
"Indoor gym." Kelley states through the cloth of her shirt that has somehow found a way to get caught in her hair and necklace as she was taking it off.
"Hey, isn't that Class B's girl's soccer period?" Lauren asks, peeking her head around the wall of lockers that separated the underclassmen from the upperclassmen.
"Yeah, so what?" Kelley answers, knowing where this conversation is going. She yanks her shirt off and immediately looks for her best friend but alas, she sees her slip into a bathroom stall.
--
Alex's mind is racing.
Tobin's voice and the voice she hears in her... darkness? Were similar, so similar that Alex's skin broke into goosebumps. She runs her fingers over her arms, wondering if she was telling herself the answer through each mump and bump; a shame she can't interpret braille.
Just then, Alex closes her eyes to find some sort of relief, her back against the door of the bathroom stall, her muscles aching to relax and they do--almost.
The look of fear in Tobin's eyes moments ago flashed across Alex's eyes and she feels her stomach drop even more. She knows Tobin's going to be in trouble for what happened on the field, she just doesn't know how much trouble she will be in, and that worries her.
It was Alex's fault. It's always Alex's fault when Tobin gets in trouble and yet Tobin keeps her lips locked and takes the blame for it all.
Last time Alex got Tobin in trouble, Tobin couldn't even make eye contact with the girl. Alex prays that doesn't happen again.
Tobin is the only person that's always been there, granted it's only been two years, the 16 year old only trusts Tobin with her every detail.
Before her mind get's consumed by Tobin, she over hears the conversation between Kelley and Lauren and Sydney.
"They're good, aren't they?" Sydney asks.
"Good? They're great!" Lauren praises, "It's just a shame they can't play in our league." A round of agreements and a few disagreements rang through the locker room at Lauren's statement.
"No, you know what's a shame?" Everyone's attention goes to Alex who is walking toward her locker.
Oh no. Kelley thinks.
"What, Alex?" Ashlyn asks, tying her boots. Alex unlocks her locker and pulls her things out,
"The fact that Class B athletes aren't allowed onto Class A teams, even if they deserve to be on one." And with that, Alex slams her locker shut.
Kelley watches as some people roll their eyes.
"C'mon, Alex, you know why they're not allowed onto our teams." As soothing as Lauren is trying to be, Alex still doesn't seem to pay her any attention.
"I know, but it's stupid and unfair to all of them. They deserve a fair chance." Alex spits out her anger into words. Sydney and Lauren exchange a knowing look but before Lauren can do anything, Sydney fires back with,
"Unfair to them or to your butler?"
Alex looks up and there's this fire in her eyes that tells Kelley that it's time for her to defuse the situation.
"And that's my cue." Kelley breathes out in exasperation. "Alex, let's go." She says, grabbing Alex by the wrist leading her to the exit toward the indoor fields.
"And what's that supposed to mean Syd?" Alex spats back, yanking her wrist out of Kelley's grasp.
"You know what I mean, Morgan. You're just bitter because you feel guilty that your-girl-butler-help-person can't play up because Host/Help interaction is forbidden outside of the necessary."
Alex huffs in disbelief and shakes her head, she gets ready to fire back but she never gets her chance because she feels Kelley dragging her toward the exit doors. For reasons still unknown to her, Alex holds her tongue and decides that leaving with Kelley is the best idea.
"You're just upset that Tobin can't play on our team because she's a member of your family's help!" Syd yelled before Alex was out of earshot.
--
Tobin sits, her bottom against the metal of the bleachers underneath her. She smiles, watching Alex read passes and finish beautiful balls and just be, well Alex. She likes to think that she's so focused on Alex because her Young Miss is that interesting, which granted she is, but at the moment she knows that letting her attention solely lie on Alex is better than it being on the punishment and scolding she'll get from both her parents and Alex's.
--
Alex sits in her room, waiting to hear any something from Tobin, but every time she calls for her Yanny, the main in charge, tells her that she is still unavailable at the moment.
It isn't until three hours have passed since she had gotten home and Tobin had followed the lead her parents had set, that she sees the lanky brunette peek her head into her room after knocking.
"Young Miss Alexandra, I was told you've been calling for me?" Tobin opens the door all the way when Alex gets up with a small smile on her lips.
"Yeah, I have for a while now, I hope you don't mind." Alex shrugs.
"Never, Young Miss." And it's the honestly that Alex finds in Tobin's simple response that melts her. She's never experienced these kind of feelings for anyone, especially not the help--her help.
"Well good," Alex smiles, "I was just wondering if you were alright."
"Me? Miss are you? You look a little rattled up."
"I could be better, but as long as you're okay, then as am I." Alex finds the look of intrigue and confusion on Tobin's face slightly endearing.
"Well, Young Miss, if that's it, I shall take my leave and call you for supper or whenever you call for me." Tobin bows and before she leaves through Alex's door, she turns and flashes her a soft grin. "Thank you, Young Miss, for your concern. I cherish it with all of me."
Alex smiles at her floor, suddenly finding it so interesting, before shaking her head to try and get Tobin out of it.
That night, she doesn't wake up to any questions.
