okay time for parallels between books 3/5 as the first entry in my “analysis” of the “mirror” structure

SIRIUS my heart

Dementors are important

the Knight Bus appears

Azkaban breakout

Harry flies on a creature introduced to him in Hagrid’s class

In general more backstory on Harry’s parents’ generation

Harry goes “adventuring” with Hermione

there are probably more I just haven’t thought of them yet

Luna is a precious cinnamon roll who is too good for this world

(am I memeing right)

but uh

yes

Luna must be protected. 

Readmored for something a little more personal

I think I identified really strongly with Hermione for a very, very long time as a kid; until I actually reached middle school and read book 5 and Luna became my favorite everything as well (not that Hermione isn’t still my forever favorite; I just don’t identify quite as strongly with her anymore)

Luna is so important, though. She’s open-minded and kind and insightful; these are just as much worthy of aspiration as Hermione’s determination and intelligence and incredible drive.

and then Sirius dies

still confused about why the veil never came up again but

it was metaphorical, I guess

we learn a LOT about Sirius in this book and then he dies

honestly I’m sadder now I didn’t care that much when I read this the first time; I didn’t like Sirius that much as a kid but

the adult characters are all more interesting to me now :(

the battle at the end of this book is one of my favorite sequences though

it’s just so WEIRD with all the random brains and planets and prophecy globes and stuff 

and the intensity just keeps ratcheting up

wow this book has a lot of seemingly random digressions; a lot of them turn out to be important later but they’re a little boring when you’re initially reading

poor Cho, poor Harry

they’re both so confused and sad

not that they don’t have reason to be

...but yeah that relationship was never going to work

Harry can’t seem to decide if he actually wants credit for the things he’s done or not

He gets really pissed off during the summer when he thinks people think he can’t take care of himself but then when Hermione and Ron suggest him teaching the DA because of the things he’s done he ascribes everything to luck

Weird teenager shit indeed

I understand this book better now that I’ve actually been 15 and angsty about everything ever but that doesn’t mean I like it

also the ISOLATION for harry at the beginning of this book is hitting super hard

I just did not get this feeling when I was in middle school

and it’s actually kind of painful to read now
