Having seen the things Straw Hat could do with his power, seeing the way he made use of it in a fight, Law had thought nothing could even surprise him anymore. After all, what could be much more ridiculous than stretching out one of his legs, swinging it around like a saw and calling it ‘Ufo’?
Wrong.
When Straw Hat’s voice had disappeared on the roof of Onigashima’s Skull Dome, it was like the whole world had stopped for a moment. Law didn’t want to believe it; he refused to believe Luffy had lost—that he was gone. Until then, he had never for a second considered the possibility; Luffy was a person who made miracles happen, a person who gave people hope where there was none, a person who refused to give up until he stood victorious.
Law had never doubted that he would beat Kaido—as long as he and Eustass took care of Big Mom so that Luffy could focus on his own enemy.
But now… his voice was gone.
DOOM DUT DA DA
Law’s eyes widened, his head whipping up, staring at the ceiling. That was definitely Luffy’s voice, louder and clearer than ever but there was… something strange about it. It was his voice but it wasn’t, almost overwhelming with the power and noise.
“Straw Hat-ya…?”
DOOM DUT DA DA
What was this sound? It didn’t even seem like Law could hear it per se, more like the rhythm resounded directly in his mind, filling him with… hope.
Unfounded, blind hope that made his heartbeat speed up, his body relaxing as he thought, it’s over.
And then, the roof broke; a giant, pure white hand reached down to grab Kaido’s dragon form like he was nothing but an earthworm, swinging him around like it was nothing. Loud laughter echoed throughout the entire island, familiar and comforting as much as it was slightly worrisome—in the back of his mind, Law had to wonder whether Luffy could even breathe in between… or if he was just completely high on adrenalin and exertion—or on fucking rubber.
But, seeing, feeling Luffy running and jumping around on the roof, changing sizes as he wanted, bending everything around him to his will as if he was the God of Freedom… Law couldn’t help but feel the corners of his mouth twitching upwards.
Luffy was seriously so ridiculous.
What even was this power? A transformation not unlike a Zoan type devil fruit… yet still so different even from that; his entire form pure white, a stark contrast to the dark, cloudy night sky…
One of his conversations with Nico Robin came to mind then, the one where she had told him about what she knew about the person known as Joy Boy, and about a god revered by all slaves, the Sun God known as Nika.
A conversation where they speculated on how it all linked together, about what Will of D could mean.
Watching Luffy right now, Law thought… maybe the answer to it all was a lot closer than they could have imagined.
It didn’t take long for Onigashima to touch the ground of Wano’s mainland after that, marking the end of the Fire Festival, of the darkness that had been covering Wano for over 25 years… of this the long, long night of fighting.
But… at the same time as the island carried by a dragon’s flame clouds gently landed, two voices went quiet.
“Room,” Law said quietly, even the words taking an impossible amount of energy. He was honestly surprised his powers managed to flicker to life, encompassing the island and the sky above for a second—just long enough to prevent Luffy from crashing down to the ground right along with Kaido.
He could barely see anymore from the way his head was spinning, body and mind exhausted from the overuse of his awakened—and even his regular—power, but he still sighed in relief when Luffy’s unconscious body appeared on the ground right in front of him.
Law could tell Luffy was barely breathing; he needed medical attention immediately but Law was… not in the right mind to do anything. He questioned his decision to bring Luffy to himself instead of dropping him on Tony’s head but he just wasn’t thinking; he only needed to see him, to make sure he was still alive, to look at his exhausted face, to touch his hair, his skin.
To hear his heartbeat, which was now once again the usual quiet thrum instead of the deafening drums in Law’s mind.
And so, Law simply counted on Marco the Phoenix leading Tony to them, the man’s observation haki strong enough to know where exactly they needed to go to take care of Luffy in Law’s place.
“You idiot,” Law mumbled as he slowly reached out, his hand coming to rest over Luffy’s lifeless one, grasping his fingers weakly.
He didn’t get a response—not that he expected one—but the simple touch was enough for Law to finally break.
Letting go of a shaky breath, Law closed his eyes and let himself fall forward, slumping down until his forehead came to rest against Luffy’s chest. It was rising, dropping, and rising again with every breath, weak and shallow, yet proof enough that he was alive. And Law gritted his teeth at the realisation, fighting back the tears that were threating to overflow.
“I swear I’m going to kill you myself one day,” he growled.
“Li… ar.”
Law felt more than heard Luffy’s broken up hum, the vibrations shaking Law’s entire body like a lightning. He basically, jumped, his head raising so quickly he felt the entire world tilt. He quickly caught himself, willing his spinning head to calm down before his eyes managed to focus on Luffy’s face.
He was looking back at him—barely noticeable from the tiny crack between his eye lids—with a grin on his face; weak and tired but there. “You guys won, too,” he mumbled.
Law clicked his tongue, giving Luffy a half-hearted glare even though he wasn’t sure if Luffy could even see it. “Obviously.”
“I’m glad,” Straw Hat replied, his smile widening minutely. He went silent for a moment then, looking up at Law as if begging for something before he finally said, “Kiss me.”
Law blinked. He wanted to scold him, to tell him that this was no time for that, that it was a miracle they were even both alive and that they should just focus on recovering right now but…
Before he even knew it, Law was already leaning down, the hand that wasn’t supporting his own weight leaving Luffy’s hand to instead cup his face.
And only a second later, their lips connected.
They moved slowly against each other, the kiss soft and gentle, yet so painfully desperate; full of all the accumulated stress, relief, and fear from the night they had just survived. Full of all the unspoken emotions hanging thick in the air between them.
Law barely even paid attention to the sound of flapping wings as a giant flaming bird came to land right next to them with a little reindeer in his talons. He just didn’t care. Not when Luffy was right here next to him, his lips cracked and dry but so very warm. He ignored the way Tony circled around them awkwardly, unsure what he was supposed to do; he just kept kissing Luffy, his thumb stroking Luffy’s cheek gently while his fingers buried in his soft, black-once-more hair.
He soaked up this moment like a sponge, taking in the way Luffy’s lips stretched into a smile against Law’s mouth, letting his quiet giggle shake him up to the core, making his own body heat up as those stupid butterflies went crazy in his stomach.
And once he finally separated, both out of breath, lips red and swollen, Law met Luffy’s barely open eyes, and decided—there was no point denying it anymore.
He was in love with this reckless idiot.
Surprisingly, the thought wasn’t as scary as it probably should have been.
Pressing one last kiss to Luffy’s lips, Law finally pulled away, letting Tony and Marco take care of the idiot and ignoring the unhappy glare Tony was giving him—likely because was being a hindrance to the treatment—as well as Marco’s amused look.
“I can’t believe you two got even more disgusting in the two years since Sabaody,” Eustass grumbled, his voice nothing short of grossed out.
“Shut the fuck up, Eustass-ya.” He was too exhausted to even flip him off. He just wanted to sleep for a month now.
No later than the thought crossed his mind, he collapsed to the ground, the world going darker as his consciousness started slipping. He was just so tired. It was okay to sleep now, right? Luffy was in good hands, Kaido and Big Mom now so far below ground that there was no way for them to get out anytime soon—if they were even alive. Law didn’t know and didn’t care right then.
He finally closed his eyes, a small smile on his lips.
By the time the underwater volcano off to the Wano mainland’s coast exploded, Law was already asleep.
1) Apoo you absolute annoying nuisance just shut up. Drake if you agree to his plan I'm ditching you from my favs.
2) Inbi looks HORRIFYING
YOU SAY NO
What the fuck is going on? Kinemon? Is this real? I know no longer whom to trust. If it's true then... Law? How did he-
Okiku- She better be cured. And uhh who's this mystery healer? It can't be Law... I don't think it's Chopper or Marco...
Err Law? Aren't you supposed to join people correctly so that they stay together...? Anyway... NOT THOSE TWO AGAIN. I'll personally get rid of Kanjuro and Orochi now >:/
Now perhaps I'd have some pity towards the Kurozumi clan but honestly? I'm no good man. Someone get rid of this monster and make the two suffer. Join your people in the grave dug for you.
There's just so many things going on in this page that it makes my bones shiver just from the intensity. Whatever the allied strawhats are doing, a new foe is coming up. And now the CP0 have finally stood up. What a mess.
That must be a stressful feeling, having that much of a responsibility. Also Yamobro's pretty much everywhere. He's been running around since forever.
HELL YES AWAKENING!!! OH MY GOD IT IS HAPPENING.
Also Yamato is on his way to the armory. And now Big Mom and these two are in his way. I wonder what he'll do?
BUT AAAAAAAAA AWAKENING
HOLY FUCK I LOVE WHEN THE TWO CO-OPERATE. They are seemingly having the upper hand right now. Oh my god I'm shaking this was a massive chapter.
I repeat, this was a massive chapter. Is this foreshadowing that Kid and Law might awaken their powers? They both admitted to having a little of an experience with it, which makes them think it could kill them. But hey, they're on the protagonist side. Pretty sure they'll manage it somehow. And holy the intensity. Oda, thankyou.
