Why are they making excuses for that? Oscar didn't have the right to the space, he went for a risky move into a known tight corner on the inside. Kimi didn't do anything wrong, he had the place and turned. Oscar decided to go for a gap that didn't exist. That penalty is deserved. Commentary just wants the title battle narrative to keep going.

Okay this penalty ruling for Oscar clearly was not based on the outcome (Charles dnf) like he hit a car into another car directly, even if Charles had been able to continue I do not think that was ever going to be labeled as "just a racing incident"

If it was a tap okay sure you have a case, but that was so much more than a tap be serious.

There have been cases in the past where the outcome was clearly influencing the penalty given(or lack thereof) but this isn't one of those cases.

I am also inclined to place some blame onto Kimi for his car placement after seeing the footage a few times over now, but I still think that Oscar didn't have the right to the space, that was the kind of move that risked a penalty, he took the risk and got the reward.

Winning a championship as a driver celebrated and admired by your peers versus winning a championship with no sportsmanship, and only your fanbase to stroke your massive ego.

A lot of rookies have talked about how Max, Lewis, Charles, etc. have gone out of their way to be kind and supportive. We don't hear that about all the drivers..

If Lewis was on the podium I know he would have been going all out. The wrong brit was on that podium today.

I don't understand because you would think Lando of all people knows what it's like being just short of breaking a streak like that and the FINALLY doing it... But no. They are both so caught up in whatever bullshit they are doing at that team they forget the entire sport is not about them.

I have watched the footage a few times and I think I ultimately agree with only Oscar getting a penalty, but also agree that Kimi had options on how to handle that he didn't take.

This isn't the first time that Oscar has driven at a start with what seems like either a lack of situational/spatial awareness or a lack of concern for the fact that his risky moves are also risking the races of multiple other drivers. In this case, he made a move he couldn't commit to and didn't fully have the space for. Going for a gap isn't a blanket pass to shove your car wherever you want in traffic and be able to call it a racing incident.

Meanwhile, even though Kimi was entitled to his space, sometimes you just have to make the call to avoid the collision. Charles left more than enough room for Kimi to avoid contact. Kimi very well could have fully spun out himself if Charles wasn't there, so it was to his benefit to use the space he had.

Where this does get iffy for me is that Kimi really only should have considered moving to avoid the contact from Oscar, and I get why he would feel like he shouldn't have to reward Oscar and concede space. But then, he also should have had a better restart.

The real frustration is that in all of this Charles was the only one who appeared to have situational awareness of the risks happening and stayed out of the way, but it was his race that got ruined from the domino effect of the other drivers' decision making. There isn't really a penalty or consequence that can happen though from Kimi not actually breaking a rule but still making a call that led to Charles having a DNF.

I think also it's harder to judge the space from Kimi's perspective. I feel like that's an area where he might have thought there was more room than there actually was.

But yes it's fully Oscar's fault. I feel like trying to put too much blame on Kimi is just trying to distract that Oscar went for a risky move, he was the car attempting to pass and then he lost control of his car and locked up. None of that is in his favor and it certainly is not just a racing incident. If it had been a tap okay fine, then we could argue more about Kimi's placement, but yes I also agree that just penalizing Oscar is correct.

I think that going for a tight inside corner like that where Oscar didn't have the right to the space is something that has a very foreseeable outcome. I think he thought he could intimidate Kimi more and Kimi just didn't back off.

I think that sometimes positional awareness can seem fine when positioning in the car and it can be hard in the second you realize it's too late. There are risks in F1 you have to take, but if you are going to risk moves like that you have got to accept the consequences when it doesn't work.

It’s been obvious since last season that neither McLaren driver really had what it took to be at the top if there was competition. There is a good case Lando fumbled 2024 too.

The big benefit to them this year has been reduced competition in Ferrari while RBR was slow to catch up. Charles and Carlos taking wins and points was massive last year to help Max keep the gap. This week was a reminder of how any slight competition or qualifying struggles and the McLaren drivers can’t handle it. Their racing IQ and wheel to wheel skills and tire management is inconsistent as the nicest description. Lando entirely folding under pressure against Charles until his engineer had to remind him they have the fastest car and how to drive it is peak McLaren driver skill.

I do think other than Max, Charles and George are the next top drivers with Charles having edge over George. Both Lando and Oscar have fallen back for me.

It’ll be interesting to see this last stretch because even though a lot of us blamed it on the wing directive, this is where McLaren fell off last year too and Oscar faded into irrelevance vs his mid season surge. Lando maintained better positions but still got beat multiple times by Max and other drivers.

I was willing to give Oscar more benefit of the doubt because I mean it was his second year that's still pretty new plenty of time to develop. But this season has been... well it has not met my expectations. I swear his w2w was better last year than it was this year.

These tracks are not Oscar's strongest, which, every driver has tracks they struggle with more, but you cannot have it be a massive chunk or that's a serious issue and doesn't help your case in being wdc material.

The wing directive really only impacted low drag and high power circuits, so Monza, Baku and Vegas. The way people talked about it wasn't entirely right, yes it impacted them, but only on tracks with certain characteristics, not the entire rest of the calendar. But also yes to agree with you, that it was certainly the drivers not being able to keep momentum.

Ferrari has the best driver lineup, McLaren or someone there thinks that's their drivers but it's not, not as good as Charles or Lewis or Max

This wdc is theirs to fumble and I will be laughing my ass off if Max takes it because McLaren should (hace already) put in team orders and really focus on getting Oscar that wdc but they won't do it

It's been giving Lando favourtism (and ofc egos all around) but also (and this could just be me being a hater) Lando doesn't have the skill nor the balls to take on other drivers and hold them up so Oscar can win espc Max (I'm not saying he's afraid, but I'm not not saying that)

I would rank them in the middle at this point. I honestly expected better racecraft from both of them this season given the car they have(I was giving a little too much benefit of the doubt I suppose) which has knocked them both down in my ranking as far as racecraft goes.

And agree, Ferrari has the most air-tight lineup. I don't think our drivers have lost us many(if any) points, it's either been team strategy error or simply the fact they do not have a competitive enough car.

I don't think there is a case to make that Mclaren should favor one driver over the other. With the points that close I don't think that Oscar has the case to say "prioritize me" and conversely Lando isn't in a position to make that either. As far as on track performances go neither have made a strongly compelling case for why Mclaren should back them for the title over their teammate. So they just need to fight it out. Oscar maybe had an argument to get preference when he was like 35 points over Lando, but he hasn't maintained that gap, so his case there just isn't convincing anymore.

I am aware of favoritism allegations on both sides, and like, even with the team interference it's not the reason Lando crashed, or that Oscar dnfed twice. These are driver errors that have been far more consequential than a slow pit stop by the team. But I really do not think that Oscar has done enough to get priority, and neither has Lando. If their chances are in jeopardy that's at least in part on them, they've had most of a season to make their cases and now Max is catching up.

There is only so much you can blame the team when I have seen the racecraft those two have put out on track this season and it's been all over the place.

And I would out George above both Mcl drivers as well, his racecraft has been continuing to improve and he's had some great drives this year. I feel like that's been going under the radar.
