Process sketches from designing the Swallow Island school uniform.

I switched the vests to knitted sweaters due to the cold. Also, I can't tell you how many times I had to go in and adjust their heights. So many edits. Oda draws teenagers with toddler proportions but I do not. I can't. It looks incredibly uncanny in my style. Penguin is nearly 16 in this fic and 16-year-olds are adult proportioned kids. If I draw these boys with realistic proportions they don't feel like the same characters though, so, I struggle on.

Anyway, here are Law's spats that didn't make it into the final version. Protect his wee ankles in the snow! This shows the silhouette of his swallow-feather collar too.

anyway i have headcanons about these two. in particular with relation to the law novels because they have Something going on there that intrigues me. the fathoms of their codependency.

- thinks he's the responsible one. sometimes he's even right

- became friends with shachi after their parents always made him look after the younger one

- more likely to push away. stops quickly

- according to shachi, his eyes are very pretty

- secretly feels protective of shachi, and like he still has to look after him

- (from novels) some mornings he wakes up and cant move his right arm. it comes back after a while, but it freaked him out at first

- looks up to penguin a bit, will never admit it

- usually the one getting them into trouble

- a bit more extroverted than penguin

- has a habit of hiding and laughing off injuries

- was the weaker one growing up

- (from novels) was the punching bag for his aunt and uncle

- more likely to hold a grudge

- got his tattoo in secret, made a game of seeing how long he could hide it from penguin. he lasted a day. he hates pain, so penguin was just surprised he didnt pass out while getting it (he almost did.)

The school uniform for Swallow Island in Little Hearts was based on the late industrial revolution vibe I associate with the North Blue from Spider Miles and Rakesh. That vibe made me rewatch Peaky Blinders just before I started writing and the soundtrack was there at the birth of this fic along with that of Disco Elysium.

But the common barn swallow is the real hero here. Hirundo Rustica!Their eggs look like Law's hat <3
