okay so. we know leon took opal's audition and ultimately failed. but like. what was the plan if he succeeded. was she going to just snatch the reigning champion and set him up in ballonlea? opal tells him he's free to leave anytime he wants but he has to navigate out of the glimwood tangle on his own and leon decides its easier to just become the gym leader

Since it's Int. Women's Day, I'm going to go off on a bit of a tangent about Sword & Shields women. I've already posted about Nessa, next is the Wizard herself, Opal.

First I just want to note that as I get older myself, I've been appreciating older characters in media much more. Kabu, Melony, Opal - love to see it. When I'm old and still cosplaying, you bet I'm going to dress up as Opal.

Opal is a wonderfully weird old lady who embodies several aspects of the 'witch'. She's nicknamed the Wizard, she has a big witchs nose and hunched back, her umbrella/parasol makes me think of a magic staff or broom, she lives in Ballonlea in the Glimwood Tangle, a dark forest inhabited by glowing mushrooms and Fairies/Imps, she abducts- uh, forcibly adopts? Bede in one of the hands-down funniest scenes I've ever witnessed in a Pokemon game, she challenges you to a game of riddles that doesn't seem to have any 'right' answers. She's a menace.

And part of that menace comes from the fact that Opel demonstrates that trait of older people who have stopped giving a shit what others think. She dresses like she's just come from the theatre (which to be fair, she has, seeing as her gym is also a stage) in a dizzying mix of purples, pinks and teals, chunky bracelets and what look like either pompoms, mothballs or huge pearls, a fancy hat, a massive fur collar, boa or scarf, red lipstick with purple eyeshadow- nothing about this woman is subtle or understated. She's a theatre stage actress. She's Lady MacBeth in Wyndon's West End. She's Dames Maggie Smith and Judi Dench. Opal reminds me of the poem "Warning" by English poet Jenny Joseph, which starts with the line "When I am an old woman I shall wear purple".

She also moves at a snails pace (which, again. Old.) but NEVER apologizes or tries to move any faster. And we know she can move if she wants to, she practically sprints over to Bede when she meets him. But otherwise she'll take her sweet time and everyone else will just have to wait.

But what's most interesting (to me personally) is how she contrasts with Chairman Rose as guardian and surrogate family to Bede. Rose is a lot more casual in how he treats Bede, giving him free reign to move as he wishes (like a kid with no routine or bedtime) and then basically abandons him when Bede doesn't live up to Roses expectations or values. Seeing as Bede was an orphan that Rose took on as a ward, this moment is nothing less than cruel and the worst part is that Rose doesn't seem even realise how much Bede is hurt by this. Bede was looking for a family, while Rose was looking for (at best) a new protégé. (Makes me wonder if Rose would have dropped Leon just as fast if he had ever lost a match or disobeyed, but at least Leon had his own family to go back to). Opal is implied to be a much stricter and attentive guardian, seeing how Bede stands to attention in her Rare League Card, but the light literally comes back into Bede's eyes under her care. We sadly don't get to see them interact much on screen, but we can see the results of Opals influence for ourselves. I love everything about Opal, but that? That alone would be enough to make me her fan.

opal from sword and shield is truly unparalleled in my opinion. the world’s oldest woman who gives you a questionnaire about herself and makes you say she’s 16 in order to battle her. she’s a fairy-type gym leader (self-explanatory). she wants to retire, so she goes outside, sees some twink, and goes: “that one. i want that one.” like a dog in a pet store window. iconic. i love her.
