a funny thing happened asking my bank about who owns them
ok so i was just thinking about my "small community bank" who recently started playing up the "independent" and "community" aspects of their institution. weighing the pros and cons of switching to a credit union, i realized one thing that would really turn me in a credit union's favor would be learning that my community bank is underwritten by a large one, or if corporations are stakeholders, something like this. i'm relatively ignorant on shit like this so i don't know if this was a possibility or not. go to the web site, doesn't say. weird. given that they talk so much shit about being small, independent and community. so i call, and they don't know of course, so they refer me to their administrative office. not unexpected. at the admin office, it was again a strange question but i got an answer. the name of the corporation formed for the bank. i thanked them and asked who the shareholders are, and who the officers are. i got put on hold again, and someone else picked up so i repeated the question. that's when it got interesting. "excuse me, who are you?" "i'm a customer. i can give you my account number, do you want it?" "no." "i've been with you about 15 years. and i just want to know who owns [my bank] since it's not on your web site --" "well i can't give you all of our shareholders' NAMES.... we're an s corp. we're private." "you're a what? i'm not familiar with--" "S CORP!... we are not required to disclose personal information." "i'm not asking for personal data i'm asking about your structure. are there any corporate stakeholders, or is it all individuals?" "who are you again?" for the third time i give my full name and offer my account number. "i'm really just a customer. i'm trying to weigh the pros and cons of switching to a credit union, and who owns the bank will factor into my decision." "you can do whatever you want. i don't care." "yeah, you were subtle about that, but i did pick up on the fact you don't care. can you tell me if you have any corporate shareholders?" "no." "no, you can't tell me, or no to the question." "no." "it's all individuals?" "yes." "why are you so upset by this question? is this not public information?" "we're an S CORP! not a c corp, we don't have disclose that." (after hanging up i looked up what an s corp was, in case you were wondering.) "what's making you so angry --" "I'M NOT ANGRY!!" "could you spell your name for me please?" she spells the last name then adds her first "and i'm SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT!" "seriously? and you yell at customers?" [in a much lower tone now that i called it that] "i'm not yelling, and i'm not angry." "i assure you i really am just a customer. and i expected to get a simple answer to a simple question. i've worked with three separate branches over the years and i've never encountered any manager who behaved like this, everyone's always been pleasant. i just wanted one bit of information and you're being extremely rude." "well i'm sorry you feel that way." "i think i just made my decision." "that's ok," "yeah, we went over that too, you don't care." there was a little more that i don't remember. but she gave me enough to go*gle. i got the S CORP!!!'s name, and her name. i found that yes, she is a VP, along with a few others. i also found that the (S!!!) corp has been embroiled in a controversy in NJ that involved one of the largest sting operations involving real estate fraud, resulting in several elected officials getting indicted, and a rabbi going to prison for money laundering and selling black market kidneys. not kidding, it's a story that could only unfold in NJ. no one at the bank was ever indicted, but i did find an order from the federal reserve from a couple years later, probably about the time the main player was getting sentenced, ordering them to do an internal audit and submit an accounting back to them spelling out who their officers are, their qualifications, and "fitness to serve." so i guess i'm not the only one asking who they are, nor am i the only one having difficulty getting an answer. and i would never have looked it up, had she not been such a raving lunatic on the phone. but if i were under investigation, i might be a little touchy too. none of this really has anything to do with OpCashBack, other than if not for them urging people to look into switching now, i wouldn't have asked. but still it's funny, i wonder who she thought i was, why, in her mind, i wanted to know... if i worked for any investigating body, i'd already know their structure and the people involved. i guess maybe she thought i was the press?? i'd like to think i ruined someone's day today.

#opcashback Global day to move your money to a credit union.
Don't forget! ;)
i'm moving my money!
I think i'm gonna go ahead and switch to a credit union, even though I'm presently with a small community bank with good service. Here's why: I've been there 15 years or so. I've tried switching to larger banks that say they can offer more, but always end up swindling several hundred bucks out of me, but since I'm so lazy I don't close my first account, I just habitually go back to using that. Monday I walk in to make a deposit and see a bunch of new shit around the lobby. “take the quiz! How well do you know [my bank]?” around the lobby there are these 5x7 papers all over the place, with questions “do you know when [my bank] was founded?” “Does [my bank] invest in the stock market?” you're supposed to fill out the questionnaire then take it to the teller and get a prize or something. But all I noticed was the – very cool by the way – fact that they were attempting to distance themselves from other banks. Each of the questions were designed to allude to the big wells fargos and chases without naming them, and differentiate themselves. That and tell us all the wonderful community improvements they've bankrolled, and stating a mission to always remain independent. That got my gears turning, so for the fuck of it I walk into a credit union down the street. I say flatly that I like my bank generally because they're different than the big ones, but tell me, what is the difference, really? Well... turns out pretty much all the fees I'm paying, which I've always been grateful to be far less than the big banks' fees, they don't impose. Ever. I can tell them flat out if I have insufficient funds, bounce the check, don't fucking pay it and help yourselves to $300 from my account, like wachovia did. Five times in one fucking day. (boy were they confused when I was unperturbed by a huge negative balance. “you made up the charges, just pay yourselves, why not?” I wonder if that account's still open.) Anyway. Membership in this credit union is either through your employer, or, you if you become a member in a wildlife charity. I'm down with that, I like birds and shit. And they're nonprofit. All credit unions are. Federally insured just like a bank, all the same services as a bank, long hours, longer than my bank, no fees, and I mean NO fees. So, go to this site here: http://moveyourmoneyproject.org/ and get the needed information about local credit unions. Every credit union is free to make their own policies and procedures, so if one can't take you, doesn't mean that another one down the street can't. More tips, repeated from my prior post on the topic: http://www.asmarterchoice.org/ and here as well: http://abcn.ws/upCJiS
