A couple of weeks ago, protesters at St Paul’s were evicted from the Occupy camp after camping out for more than four months. Most of the media coverage during the time they were there was about whether or not they were entitled to stay, and when St Paul’s Cathedral or the City of London would decide enough was enough.

But we learned very little about the protesters themselves. Who were they? Why did they decide to give up their normal lives to camp? Did they all want the same thing? And did they get it?

In late December we set out hoping to make an episode about what Occupy was for, straight from the horse’s mouth. It very much ended up being about the people there, and the stories of how they found themselves camping in the heart of London’s financial district in the winter of 2011/12.

Many of the Occupy camps have been torn down, but has the message had an impact?

Whereas the cathedral has wanted to address the financial crisis with well-meaning seminars and reports, the camp is all about nonviolent direct action. It is angry, it is scruffy and it is loud. Much more like John the Baptist than your average Anglican cleric, who can be too easily conscripted within the bosom of the establishment.

What happened is a great sadness – it is exactly as Giles Fraser warned might happen. "The tragedy is that while Christians were praying on the steps of St Paul's Cathedral, the cathedral gave permission for them to be forcibly and violently removed. The cathedral has backed and colluded in this eviction.

This is why you should never insult all religious people without some caveats. Criticise "religion" as an institution all you want, but some people like this are badasses.
