George Plimpton, from "Open Net" in The Greatest Hockey Stories Ever Told
WTF SANCHEZ HOOOOOOW
Oh no, that was all left on the ice, the bad feelings, and it was a great shock to leave hockey and very hard. It had been the best of times. But what happens, is that you see your teammates every day, and then when it’s over, it’s over. You never see them again. You wonder why so-and-so who was your friend, and you roomed with him on the road trips, wouldn’t give a call when he comes through town. You could sit around and tell stories. Have a beer. He could come to your house and see your children. Maybe look at the doll houses. But they don’t call. They never call. You wonder. You wonder. After you leave, there is no contact with anyone. It hurts. It makes you feel like you’re a gust in the wind.

I played horrible yesterday.
I did get a pancake, but besides that, I couldn’t
1. serve (I don’t know what’s wrong. There was a someone who told me not to make steps and to just toss it. I did it and it worked. I just want to work on it more where I can become consistent and start serving like short and light when I want to or hard and deep). 2. hit (I can never figure out what I’m doing wrong. I only know that I’m doing something wrong because it’s not going over/going out/the way it feels). I usually hit over, so I tried getting over the ball more rather than reaching for it. It always went into the net. I’m decent at tipping when the net is womens height, but with mens I can’t do shit. I know my swing isn’t straight. I did find out that I like the ball towards the outer part, but when someone figured that out for me, the ball was always way too far from the net. It’s weird). 3. bump (aiming bumps to the setter and making it higher so that it’s easier to set. When I pepper, we’re always close and i bump low af. I’m not using my legs). 4. receive from a good serve or hit (I’m too scared for it to hit my face if it’s higher than my range of bumping. I always dodge it. When I was playing in high school, our tactics would be that the people in the back would always have deep and the wings in the front get short, so that if it was over our heads, it’s out, but with the people I played with, The sides in the back play short and the middle plays deep. I have to learn how to put my hands up).
I’m so inconsistent it hurts. I just don’t understand how people stay consistent. I wish I had a gym near me where I could just practice by myself or with another person. Not just on wednesdays. I feel like EVERYONE has open net on wednesdays. I also do not have any friends to play with that is really serious about open net (around me). :c
