I said I would come back and do a review of Open Office once I had used it more, and honestly, I don't know why more people don't talk about it and why I have never heard anybody in online writing communities mention it? Because it's SO GOOD
It is completely FREE, it's a one time download and then you can use it forever with no charge, which is so incredibly rare these days. It has the same formatting as old school Microsoft Word so if you have experience with that then it's pretty intuitive to use, and whatever tools or aspects are not intuitive to you are very easy to Google and figure out quickly.
You can customize the background so you can look at a pleasing pretty colour while you're writing (and I have even thought about the possibility of customizing the colour to set the mood for a particular piece of writing - so making it darker for a horror piece or something like that), there is tons of fonts, you can customize the formatting and spacing in so many more ways than with Google Docs, and your customization is saved as a preset for your next document.
Maybe the only possible "downside" for some people would be the fact that it doesn't have cloud storage, but I absolutely hate cloud storage, because I hate the file formats and organization and I much prefer file organization when it's stored on my harddrive. And on the off chance that I need more storage IF my laptop runs out, I would rather pay for storage on a flash drive that I can keep safe in my own possession than pay a company for more storage and potentially have them lose my docs.
And I am used to getting in the habit of saving my docs ever time I take a small break from writing from years of working on the old Microsoft Word, AND Open Office has an autosave feature and an auto recovery feature if your computer shuts down, and if you go to close the doc without saving, it will ask you to save first. So there's not really any flaws there.
And in terms of writing on my phone vs writing on my computer, I write primarily on my laptop anyway so I almost never need to access my docs on my phone, but if I have an idea or something I want to make note of and add to my fic, I either save it as a Tumblr draft or put it into a small google doc to add to my Open Office doc of my fic later. In my opinion, there is no reason to ever need cloud storage unless you are in college or something like that and doing school work on google docs.
Even if you need to share your fic with a Beta reader or something, you can just share attach it in an email to them like people did old school style.
But yeah, I love Open Office and I don't know why more people don't talk about it and I don't know why I haven't heard anybody reccomend it before
