Cian Veri couldn’t quite tell you when or where he was born. He remembers very little of his life as a child, having had to grow up quickly to care for his younger brother, Kyran. Cian knew their father was killed while on an archeology dig, at least that’s what he had always called it. Unbeknownst to Cian, his father had worked for the government, and had been searching for Objects of Deadly Sin. When he and his team members found a black leather wallet, an Object of Greed, one his team members had gone crazy and killed the rest of the team, Cian’s father included, and run away with the wallet.
Their mother was another mystery, though. Kyran never knew her, but Cian remembered her vaguely. She left just a couple of years after Kyran was born, for reasons unknown. There’s only one thing Cian knows about her: she was a vampire. It was a fact his father had tried to hide from him and Kyran for years, until one day, as a young boy, Cian had broken down in a frustrated, confused anger, yelling at his father that he was broken. Because where other children saw a bleeding, injured animal, they felt remorse, regret and couldn’t stand the sight of it. But Cian? He craved it. That’s when his father had given in and told him the truth: his mother was a vampire.
Cian and Kyran were only children when they found themselves alone and thrown into at least a dozen group homes that they ran from as quickly as they were placed. Cian wasn’t sure if the social workers eventually gave up on finding them, or they just got lucky when they were no longer thrust into home after home. When he was fifteen and Kyran was eight, they were on their own, with Cian stealing food and money for them, and Kyran often going by himself into several shops and markets to beg for food. The younger one had a more sympathetic look to him back then, while Cian had often been accused of being up to no good. Which wasn’t an unfair assumption, all things considered. Cian learned from an early age the the only person he could count on was himself. It was he and his brother against the world, and he didn’t give a damn who got in their way.
Normal food only sustained them for so long, though. Unwilling to force the burden of taking a life on his little brother, Cian would kill, would drain victims of their blood, bringing it back to his little brother. Kyran never questioned his methods or his sources, a fact for which Cian was glad. For a while he could get by on killing animals, but around when he turned sixteen, it began making him sick if he didn’t have human blood. Kyran’s diet switched at that time as well, though Cian never made it a point to tell him.
But that was centuries ago for the two vampires. As years and decades wore on, they began making their money by taking odd jobs, delivering drugs and collecting payment, making threats on behalf of their short-term employers, and following through on a few threats when necessary. Eventually their reputations reached the ears of a few Mafia families, and the pair were enlisted as hunters. They were well compensated, but Cian never trusted any of them. To any that has hired them, he’s only known as Shawn, and his brother as Kevin. His loyalties shift between the families, depending on who offers them more for the next job. His loyalties don’t even lie solely solely with the Mafia families.
He and his brother have taken jobs from dirty government agents, and a few odd dealers on the side, though now prefer to take jobs from mafia families, and will avoid working with unfamiliar hunters at any cost. After working with another hunter, who only identified herself as Magpie, a frankly ridiculous alias in Cian’s opinion, he’s now leery of working with hunters he doesn’t trust. On the job, he, his brother and Gordon, another hunter that they had worked with for several years who went by the alias Bill, joined Magpie on a job. Because of misinformation provided by Magpie, Gordon ended up dead, Cian took a bullet through the shoulder, and Kyran got a broken arm. Even though as a vampire, Cian and Kyran’s injuries healed within a few hours, Cian went after Magpie for blood. She escaped him, and last he heard through a hunter’s bulletin, she had been seen with government agents. If he ever ran into the girl again, he would kill her without a second thought. Cian now stays solely in mafia-controlled areas of the city, avoids working with unfamiliar hunters, and despises the government. As far as he’s concerned, at least the families had the decency to admit that they were crooked up front, not hide it behind claims of democracy and common good.
It was common knowledge that vampires were almost always immune to the power of the Objects, and it proved to be true in Cian’s case. He didn’t want to risk his brother’s safety on the off chance that he wasn’t immune, so he’d always insisted that when it came time to collect the Objects, he was the one to do it. At least, until one job, when they were hired by the head of the Pride family to retrieve a Ring that had been allegedly stolen. Their tip was bad though, and an ambush led to, not a Ring of Pride, but a Watch of Sloth, which nearly fell down a sewer grate, and Kyran just barely caught it. The visceral reactions Kyran had to the Watch were what made Cian sick. What told him that Kyran wasn’t immune as he was.
Cian is called heartless by many, but that’s not true. He cares deeply for his brother more than anyone else in the world, and would do anything in his power to keep him safe. He’s also been called ruthless and cold, neither of which he’d deny. In all his time, having seen so many people die from their own selfishness, stealing and keeping the Objects for themselves, despite the horrific effects of them, just for that short, momentary power they are allowed, Cian has little regard for the lives of others. Clearly they had no regard for their own lives, so why should he? If he were told that the cure to his brother’s suffering could only be found in the mass murdering of the entire island, his only question would be if there was a prefered method of massacre.
Though he doesn’t trust easily or often, he is amicable to anyone that he works with, so long as they offer him the same treatment. He finds personal connections useless unless they yield tangible results, and dismisses the idea of having friends just for the sake of having friends.
Cian’s expression is not an easy one to read, at least not accurately. He often has a small smile or smirk on his lips, that implies some devious thought or malicious intent behind his eyes. He walks confidently, and speaks carefully, his voice almost eerily gentle, and never saying much unless it is something of consequence.
He usually wears dark jeans and a button-down shirt. He finds slacks to be too constraining when he’s trying to fight or run, but prefers to look professional when meeting with potential employers. The blend of the two suits him well enough. He’s almost always wearing a hat when outside during the day, to avoid getting painful sunburns. He and Kyran prefer to take jobs that require them to be out at night for that reason. He usually also carries a small backpack, which holds various small weapons, and gloves that he always used to insist Kyran wear before they’d determined whether or not he was immune.
Despises former hunter “Magpie” (Aka, Magenta Nanthini)
Cian’s brother just came into possession of a Watch of Sloth. Driven by a need to protect his brother from the horrific consequences of a non-immune vampire being affected by an Artifact, Cian will stop at nothing to find a cure.
