Closing of the Mouth?
’… on completion all works of art, such as statues and reliefs with their accompanying inscriptions, had to undergo a religious rite. The Opening of the Mouth, in order to animate them, and thus ceremony was repeated periodically’ (Alfred, 1985, p.21) I’ve been doing a little research on the Opening of the Mouth. I’d always assumed that once the mouth was open, that was it, open forever. Unless if it is closed ritually. The above source, appears to say that the Opening of the Mouth would gradually fade and need topping up? Do anyone have any more information?? Source: Alfred, C., (1985) 'Egyptian Art'.
