March 24th is a date when Serbia mourns the loss of innocent lives and devastations caused by US and NATO bombing in 1999, impacts of which are felt to this day. Intervention's code name was 'Merciful Angel' and it was conducted without approval of UN Security Council (Russia and China vetoed it). It lasted for 78 days, killing more than 2k civilians, which was then classified by NATO as a ‘collateral damage’.
I remember a dark humor joke circulating during that period:
- “How do Belgrade citizens feel when they wake up in the morning?”
- “Missed.”
