Page 1. ---- BRITISH GARRISON SMASHES WAY OUT OF LONG-BESIEGED AFRICAN PORT Not since the days of the Boer war, when Mafeking languished long beneath a siege, has a garrison been beleaguered as many as the 224 days which ended today for the garrison of Tobruk. Finally the British imperial garrison has smashed joyfully its way out of the Libyan port, and is reported pushing steadily forward. The British offensive into Libya is said to be ‘developing to our advantage.’ This photo shows the desert at Tobruk, with British forces in the thinned-out formation most effective for desert fighting. It was made when Gen. Archibald Wavell, now in the Middle East, was in command of British forces in Africa.
