As part of the Kreigsmarine's Operation Drumbeat (U-Boat action off the east coast of USA), Hardegen reached New York City in 1942, after navigating there using a map in a brochure from the 1939 World’s Fair. "I cannot describe the feeling with words, but it was unbelievably beautiful and great".
