As part of the Kreigsmarine's Operation Drumbeat (U-Boat action off the east coast of USA), Hardegen reached New York City in 1942, after navigating there using a map in a brochure from the 1939 World’s Fair. "I cannot describe the feeling with words, but it was unbelievably beautiful and great". The second image is the famous photograph of New York City's skyline through Hardegen's periscope. #WW2pix
HISTORY MEME: 10 MOMENTS | OPERATION DRUMBEAT (1942)
In January 1942 six U-boats were sent out to wreak havoc on the other side of the Atlantic during Operation Drumbeat (German: Unternehmen Paukenschlag). Without meeting a lot of resistance the U-boats reached the American coast and started their mission. During the day they would lay still on the coastal soil, during the night they approached the merchant ships to torpedo them. The result was devastating: by the end of January 1942 62 ships had been sunk. Operation Drumbeat lasted until June 1942, the hunting ground was then moved to the Caribbean Sea.
