A prologue

They couldn’t have picked a worse time to do this. It was the middle of the day, the oppressive sun at its apex.

“Almost,” said Carol, straining.

Daryl pressed into his toes, trying to get more leverage.

“How’s that?” he asked, the sweltering heat beading on his face and arms.

“Closer,” she said, encouraging him, feeling the sweat dripping down her neck.

“A little more... Yes! Right there!” Carol exclaimed.

Daryl grunted in his efforts.

Glenn stared at the pair in the mud of the creek from where he stood on  lookout.

“Guys, what the hell is going on down there?”

Daryl and Carol looked up from where they were fixing the water pump, the realization of what they’d been saying dawning on their faces.

“Shut up!” Daryl shouted, his face reddening from embarrassment. “I got it in.” He reached his hand up to cover his face when he realized what he’d said.

Carol grinned. “That’s what he said.”

Glenn burst out laughing.

One of my favorite Caryl head-canons is that Carol has been in love with Daryl for years, way before Ezekiel, but is very aware that Daryl was not in a place to get into a romantic relationship. So, she carried on with her life. Having learned from her time with Ed that if something good comes your way, seize it if you can. While on the flip side, Daryl has been in love with Carol similarly, but hasn’t been ready to do anything about it. And it took till Ezekiel for him to see the big fat flaw in that particular plan. So, he lived in the forest like a hobo for six years, pouting and trying to find Rick.

But mostly pouting.
