Sometimes I’m shocked by how many good sketches I had of my books back in the day (pre-2014, when I switched over to digital only)
I swear The Duke’s Prisoner only got finished because I loved drawing the outfits so much. SO MANY WONDERFUL CLOTHES. I still love the one of Abele, Kasha, and Opheali at the opera, 6 years later. Abele’s expression is perfect.
Inktober drawing of Opheali, Kasha’s wife and best friend. Opheali got her start as a lady of the night, but she became friends with Kasha at university. Because Kasha needed to keep up certain pretenses, they decided to marry, and they eventually had three children, one boy and two twin girls. They have a lovely open marriage, where Kasha can be with the love of his life Abele and Opheali can just sleep with whatever man she likes.

The obscenely wealthy Duka Kasha of Jentirrya is known for his wild parties and devotion to the latest fashions. But beneath his seemingly frivolous exterior, he seeks revenge on a brutish enemy officer for an unspeakable crime. Colonel Rodan is as recalcitrant as he is stoic, the exact opposite of any traits Kasha finds worthwhile. Kasha offers to take good care of Rodan’s captured son, as long as he submits— something that doesn’t come easily to someone as bullheaded as Rodan. Kasha may not be a war-weary soldier, but he knows how to hold his own in a battle of wits. And Rodan did not gain his battle reputation by backing down easily.
However, all may not be as it seems, and when the truth comes out, Kasha and Rodan must strike out together, finding that their similarities matter far more than their differences.

From the archives. Characters from The Duke’s Prisoner. I really love unnecessarily gaudy Baroque fashion (and fops), which was the whole reason I wrote this story.
Kasha is the king’s nephew, but he loves partying and slutty people too much to fall in line with the rest of his family. So he marries a prostitute, hangs out with “undesirables”, and gets drunk on wine all the time. It’s a fabulously sinful and decadent existence.
I even parodied it in Rainbow Mansion.
