MY BOOK IS OUT!
Hello everybody! My book, The Only Seconds that Matter, is out today! I have a ton of writing experience despite having very few actual published works (writing is fun! Publishing is not!), so it'd mean the world to me if you checked out my novel if you're interested in any of the following:
An ex-professional bronc rider (bisexual) + horse trainer (gay and trans)
Strong hurt/comfort vibes
A story about surviving trauma and addiction while dealing with toxic patriarchal expectations
Friends to lovers
Goofy southern good ole boy x quiet and reserved type
Adult characters who act like adults (well, except Johnny lol)
The tribulations of being out in a very conservative small town in Oklahoma
Horses as written by someone with nearly 30 years of riding experience
"I will love you no matter how hard you make it"
Semi-adoption of a 10-year-old
For a list of content warnings, check out my website (they will be spoilery). I will say that while transphobia and homophobia are understood as present in society, there are no on-screen incidents of this beyond general cluelessness. It's meant to be an uplifting novel!
You can purchase via Amazon or Kobo.
Below is the summary. My website also has art, if you're interested in seeing what the characters look like.
Victor Ortiz-Bennett had some reservations about moving to Oklahoma, but his late aunt willed him a 70-acre horse farm, and he decides to fulfill his dream of running and operating his own training facility. Victor’s been around the reining horse show circuit for a while, and he’s ready to settle down, travel less, and spend more time with the horses he loves and away from the people he can do without. That is, until he picks up a horse at an auction with a bucking problem he can’t fix, and he has to take her to the one guy who can ride anything– Johnny Stearns, a retired professional rodeo rider.
Johnny Stearns is loud, chatty, eccentric, and fears nothing, exactly Victor’s opposite. However, as Victor starts providing lessons to Johnny’s horse-loving niece, Victor finds himself sinking into an odd friendship with this new foul-mouthed cowboy without a filter, diving deeper into the mess that is Johnny’s life until there’s no way to extract himself from it. Johnny may talk a tough game, but there’s more to him than he’ll let most people see. Victor knows getting in too deep will mean a rough ride, but if there’s anything Johnny’s taught him, it’s how to stay in the saddle.

Daddy Long-Legs: unlike spiders, these arachnids can eat solid food, and they have an omnivorous diet that includes mushrooms, berries, and seeds, along with invertebrate prey
Harvestmen, otherwise known as daddy long-legs (not to be confused with the cellar spiders of family Pholcidae, which are also described as daddy long-legs) bear a striking resemblance to spiders, but they actually belong to a separate order of arachnids known as Opiliones. These strange-looking creatures have eight legs, but only two eyes, and their body segments are largely fused together, giving the body a noticeably rounded, pill-like appearance.
Above: Metagryne bicolumnata, commonly known as the bunny harvestman
There are roughly 6,700 known species of harvestman, but researchers estimate that a total of more than 10,000 species may currently exist. Their physical features vary greatly from one species to the next; some harvestmen have crab-like claws, spikes, thorny legs, elongated bodies, colorful features, or cryptic markings. Most of them are equipped with long, spindly legs, but there are some that have shorter, stockier limbs instead.
Above: three different species of harvestman
Unlike spiders, harvestmen have an omnivorous diet that includes fungi, fruit pulp, seeds, pollen, lichen, algae, and invertebrate prey, and they are capable of consuming solid food, whereas spiders are typically carnivorous and feed only on fluids.
Above: a harvestman from genus Chasenella munching on a mushroom-cap
As this article explains:
Harvestmen consume mushrooms, fruit pulp, seeds, and seed appendages more frequently than spiders probably because they are “solid food feeders," which means they can ingest solid tissues by biting off small pieces. In turn, spiders are “fluid feeders” and feed on vegetable matter most frequently in the form of fluids (e.g. nectar, stigmatic exudate, plant sap, and honey dew) rather than fungal or plant tissues.
Above: genus Marthana
When given a choice between fresh fruit or invertebrate prey, some harvestmen actually prefer the fruit:
Schaus et al. carried out a feeding trial in which the Neotropical harvestman Erginulus clavotibialis was given a choice between fresh pineapple and live invertebrate prey. This harvestman demonstrated a distinct preference for fruit over the invertebrate prey.

Harvestmen are also much more social than spiders, and the males of some species have been known to engage in paternal care, which is a trait that rarely occurs among arthropods:
Single fatherhood is the rarest form of parental care in nature. Still, males are often the sole caretakers of progeny among a number of species of daddy long-legs, also known as harvestmen. In these species, fathers are exclusively responsible for guarding eggs that females lay on the undersides of leaves; the males remain on the eggs nearly constantly for months.

When threatened, harvestmen often bob up and down erratically in an effort to confuse their attackers. They also have several other defense mechanisms, including pungent, foul-tasting secretions, the ability to "play dead," and autotomy, which is the ability to discard one or more of their own limbs in order to escape from predators.
Above: the photo at the top shows an unidentified harvestman from family Cosmetidae, while the photo on the bottom shows a species from genus Gnomulus
Harvestmen are completely harmless to humans. Their fangs are far too small to penetrate human skin, and contrary to popular belief, they do not have the "world's deadliest venom" -- in fact, they don't produce any venom at all.

BRIGHT DAY BLUE DAY
CHAPTER 13 of BOOK 2 is UP!
Despite birthing hundreds of eggs over their lifetime, Untkra has never known the fate of a single one—until now. Unfortunately their now teenage child Ichtaku is imprisoned deep within inside the dangerous and war-torn city of Yukiktrum, and Untkra finds they must return to the place they fought so desperately to escape less than a year ago. But this time they’ve got a team and help from the outside. There’s a chance they could pull it off and bring their child home, but only if everything goes according to plan.
Akche hasn’t been to Yukiktrum over ten years, not since they barely escaped abduction by the Utskraith. Returning now feels like a suicide mission, but Akche has run from their past long enough, and returning seems like the only way to put old trauma to rest. When they go looking for ghosts of Akche’s past, Akche is unprepared for what they find—and emboldened to save Ichtaku, no matter what it takes.
Genre: Sci-Fi
Rating: 18+
T/W: This story is dark in nature, and while nothing explicit is ever shown, there are repeated references to rape (including underage), sexual slavery, and I suppose what equates to child trafficking (is selling eggs considered child trafficking?). There is also violence, murder, drug use, and prejudice/bigotry. This story also contains the trappings of a/b/o. It’s not so closely married to the trope as most a/b/o fics, but it is quite obviously based on it.
Excerpt:
"Why didn’t you tell me?” Akche asked.
Vamtlak opened their mouth, then shook their head. “Please let go of me. I need to go home.”
“I want to help you. Let me do that.” When Vamtlak didn’t respond, Akche bent lower in hopes they could catch Vamtlak’s gaze. “Vamtlak. Look at me, please.”
But Vamtlak wouldn’t look at them. They kept their face turned away, feathers pinched together. “Who is Untkra to you?”
“What?” Akche squinted, confused. “Why are we talking about Untkra?” At this, Akche glanced across the street, where Untkra still stood watching them. They seemed concerned, but not enough to approach.
“Are you together?” Finally Vamtlak’s eyes bounced to Akche, and Akche could hear a ragged pain in their voice.
“Why would you think that?” Akche tried to think of any contact Akche and Untkra had shared in Vamtlak’s presence, but couldn’t recall. Had Untkra said something to them? That didn’t seem possible; they hadn’t been alone together since they’d met. Besides, Untkra didn’t seem like someone who would do that.
“Just tell me.”
“Why? Why does it matter?”
“So you are together.”
“Twins, Vamtlak!” Akche finally released their arms, stepping back to sweep a hand over their feathers. “After all this time, are you still this jealous?”
“I’m not jealous. I just want to know the truth.”
Akche wanted to fight about it, because it didn’t matter. Untkra’s presence was not a factor in Akche’s desire to get Vamtlak somewhere safe. Akche’s love for Vamtlak had always been complex and full of contradictions, so much so that Akche had thought their feelings for Gatkri had been some kind of farce because it had seemed so simple and straightforward. So what was more complexity on top of something already complicated? Akche didn’t know how to communicate the nature of their feelings to Vamtlak, but they’d never been able to, nor had that ever been expected.
“Fine. Yes, I’m with Untkra. Is that what you wanted to hear?”
“You’re with an ometki,” Vamtlak said, matter-of-factly.
“Yes.”
“Okay.” Vamtlak rolled their lips together several times, working through something. “Okay,” they said much more quietly.
Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller - "Young lady at her toilette" (1840)
i think one of the best parts about being a teenager in the early to mid 2010s was that cigarettes were definitely not cool anymore and vapes hadn’t popularized yet so my lungs made it out of my peak impressionable years relatively unscathed
i found this series on Amazon which is obviously created with Ai and the author's name is "Silvana Falcon"
And inside the book, this person claims that the "artist" is Ana J Phoenix. -_____-
PLAYING IN OUR DAMN FACES.
Not a single review mentions that it was written with AI, of course. 🙃
Centaur Watching Fish by Arnold Böcklin (1878).
I love love love Böcklin’s mythical pieces, they have this sense of realism, and often even sensitivity.
I thought I recognized the style so I looked it up and I’m so happy because this is the same artist who painted Centaur at the Village Blacksmith.
I love that this was a subject he apparently went to multiple times. Centaurs in perfectly mundane situations.
Don’t worry, he also painted them doing what they do best - beating the shit out of each other.
